Softball headed to Florida for Madeira Beach Invite

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – After a strong opening to the 2018 season, the Lipscomb softball team is headed to Florida for the EMU Madeira Beach Spring Invitational this weekend hoping to build upon the hot start to the year.

The Lady Bisons have five games on the docket for the weekend. On Friday, Lipscomb is set to take on Virginia at 12:30 p.m. and George Mason at 5:30 p.m. Saturday will feature matchups with Ohio (10 a.m.) and Jacksonville State (12:30 p.m.). The Purple and Gold will close out the tournament against UNC Greensboro at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

The Lady Bisons opened up their season at the 2018 Sand Dollar Classic in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where they went 2-0 with both wins coming against “Power Five” schools.

Lipscomb started off 2018 by defeating Georgia Tech 1-0 thanks to a 17 strikeout performance form junior Mandy Jordan.

The Purple and Gold followed up that game with a 3-0 victory over No. 14 Ole Miss. Junior Jordan Fortel, in her first start with the Lady Bisons, pitched a no-hitter against the nationally-ranked Rebels. She was named D1 Softball and the ASUN’s Pitcher of the Week for her efforts.

After the two wins, Lipscomb is now receiving votes in both the Collegiate Softball Poll and the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.

Scouting the Opponents:

Virginia: The Cavaliers have started off the season 2-3, with wins over Houston Baptist and Southern at the Cowgirl Classic hosted by McNeese State. Virginia was picked to finish eighth in the ACC Preseason Coaches Poll.

George Mason: This weekend will be GMU’s first test as they open the season on Friday against host EMU before taking on the Bisons. The Patriots return 2017 A10 Co-Pitcher of the Year Marina Vitalich.

Ohio: The Bobcats are also kicking off their season this weekend, with matchups against Virginia and UNC Greensboro on Friday before the game against Lipscomb on Saturday. Ohio was selected to finished second in the MAC East Division in the coaches’ preseason poll.

Jacksonville State: JSU have gotten off to a 4-2 start to the season, which included a 1-1 split in two games with the ASUN’s Jacksonville Dolphins at the River City Leadoff. Taylor Beshears was named the OVC Player of the Week after her performance in the tournament.

UNC Greensboro: The Spartans have begun the season 3-1 after a strong performance at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic at Coastal Carolina. There, UNC-G defeated the Big 12’s Iowa State, and their only loss came against the host squad.

Live stats will be provided for all the Lipscomb games over the weekend. EMU’s tournament information page, linked above, will provide live stats links, tournament results, and updates. Make sure to check back here for a full recap for the weekend’s events.
