Gray grabs win as softball sweeps Friday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lipscomb softball team started off the Samford Invitational in a winning way on Friday by grabbing a pair of victories.

The Lady Bisons (7-2) defeated the hosts Samford 4-1 on Friday night to follow up their afternoon victory over Indiana.

Sophomore Megan Gray nearly pitched a complete game shutout for Lipscomb, giving up just one run in the bottom of the seventh. Gray notched eight strikeouts and only allowed five hits in route to her second win of the season.

Junior Sarah Higgins broke the game open for the Bisons in the fifth inning. After four scoreless innings, Higgins smashed a two-run double down the left field line to put Lipscomb ahead 2-0.

Prior to the double, freshman Caitlin Turner singled, then stole second, and senior Abby Fenichel walked, setting up the runs.

After the Higgins double, sophomore Hannah Devault reached base on an error, while Higgins scored on the play to give Lipscomb a 3-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Lipscomb grabbed an insurance run. Fenichel singled up the middle, and then freshman Jenna Endris came in as a pinch runner. Devault singled up the middle on the next at bat, scoring Endris and putting Lipscomb ahead 4-0.
