BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lipscomb softball team started off the Samford Invitational in a winning way on Friday by grabbing a pair of victories.
The Lady Bisons (7-2) defeated the hosts Samford 4-1 on Friday night to follow up their afternoon victory over Indiana.
Sophomore Megan Gray nearly pitched a complete game shutout for Lipscomb, giving up just one run in the bottom of the seventh. Gray notched eight strikeouts and only allowed five hits in route to her second win of the season.
Junior Sarah Higgins broke the game open for the Bisons in the fifth inning. After four scoreless innings, Higgins smashed a two-run double down the left field line to put Lipscomb ahead 2-0.
Prior to the double, freshman Caitlin Turner singled, then stole second, and senior Abby Fenichel walked, setting up the runs.
After the Higgins double, sophomore Hannah Devault reached base on an error, while Higgins scored on the play to give Lipscomb a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Lipscomb grabbed an insurance run. Fenichel singled up the middle, and then freshman Jenna Endris came in as a pinch runner. Devault singled up the middle on the next at bat, scoring Endris and putting Lipscomb ahead 4-0.
The Lipscomb softball team earned another win over a “Power Five” school on Friday as they kicked off the Samford Invitational with a 2-0 win over Indiana.
Junior Mandy Jordan went the distance, throwing 11 strikeouts and only allowing three hits to get her second shutout of the season. She is now 3-0 on the year.
The Lady Bisons (6-2) scored both runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sophomore Peyton Ward started the sequence of events by walking and then stealing second.
Junior Destinee Brewer then reached base on a fielding error before advancing to second on an errant throw. Ward scored on the throw, putting Lipscomb ahead 1-0.
Freshman Caitlin Turner singled to first, and then also stole second. Senior Abby Fenichel walked to load the bases for the Lady Bisons.
A bases-loaded wild pitch advanced all runners, scoring Brewer and giving Lipscomb a two-run advantage.
NEXT UP: The Lady Bisons will play another pair of game tomorrow at the Samford Invite. They are set to take on Samford at 11 in the morning, followed by a 1:30 p.m. outing with Indiana.
