BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Lipscomb softball team needed four victories heading into the weekend for head coach Kristin Ryman to earn her 400th career win, and the Lady Bisons responded with a four-game sweep of the Samford Invitational.
Lipscomb (9-2) closed out the invite with a 3-1 win over the host Bulldogs to help Ryman reach the milestone.
Junior Mandy Jordan came through with her second victory of the weekend, pitching five strikeouts and allowing just four hits. She is now 5-0 on the season.
Lipscomb allowed an early Indiana run in the second, but struck back in the third with a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1.
Senior Abby Fenichel doubled down the right field line, and junior Sarah Higgins followed with a double of her own to score Fenichel.
Lipscomb grabbed two more runs in the fourth. Junior Khayla Green led off the inning with a walk. Sophomore Peyton Ward then singled, advancing Green to second.
Fenichel came through again, doubling down the right field line to score both runners and give Lipscomb a 3-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Ryman’s Road to 400:
- This is Ryman’s 13th season with the Lady Bisons.
- She led Lipscomb to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2014, advancing to the Regional Finals each season and posting a 2-2 record in those trips.
- She earned the first at-large NCAA Tournament bid in school history.
- She has won 40 or more games twice in a season and 30 or more games seven times.
- She won a program-high 50 games in 2010.
- She has coached 44 All-Conference selections, 22 All-Freshman members, 17 All-Tournament selections, and 16 All-Academic honorees.
Game one: Lipscomb 5 Samford 0
The Lipscomb softball team continued their winning ways for the weekend, defeating host Samford 5-0 on Saturday afternoon in Birmingham.
The Lady Bisons swept both matches with the host Bulldogs at the Samford Invitational.
Junior Jordan Fortel pitched a shutout for Lipscomb, allowing only four hits and dealing three strikeouts for her second win of the season.
Lipscomb struck first with three runs in the third. Freshman Caitlin Turner walked, and senior Abby Fenichel blasted a double off the wall to score Turner for Lipscomb’s first run.
Sophomore Hannah Devault singled to left and advanced to second on the throw, while Fenichel moved to third.
Devault and Fenichel then both scored on a fielding error during senior Caitlin Plocheck’s at bat.
In the fourth, sophomore Peyton Ward reached base on a hitch-by-pitch, advanced to second on a ground out, and made it to third on a single from Turner.
Turner and Ward then performed a double steal, with Ward swiping home plate to give Lipscomb a 4-0 lead.
The Lady Bisons grabbed an insurance run in the sixth. Brewer singled, and then Turner reached base on a fielder’s choice, with Brewer making it to third on the throw.
Fenichel singled to left scoring Brewer to put Lipscomb ahead 5-0.
Sophomore Chloe Yeager entered in the seventh to earn her first save of the season.
NEXT UP: The Lady Bisons will be at home for the first time in 2018 as Draper Diamond hosts the Purple/Gold Challenge. Lipscomb will have four games over the weekend, starting on Friday afternoon at 3:30 against Georgia Southern.
