Softball falls to Iowa State in first game of Cougar Classic

HOUSTON – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball team started out the Cougar Classic on a less than happy note.

Iowa State, 11-10, scored at least one run in each of the first five innings, including two in the fourth, on the way to a 6-1 win Friday afternoon. The Lady Bisons slipped to 11-5 with the loss.

Lipscomb is back in action at 5:30 this afternoon again Houston, the tournament host.

Khayla Green drove in the only run for the Lady Bisons with a single to right field that scored Hannah DeVault in the second inning.

Lead-off hitter Caitlin Turner set the pace at the plate for the Lady Bisons with a pair of doubles, both to left center field. Turner continues to lead the team in hitting with a .345 average.

Megan Gray, 2-2, pitched the first two innings for Lipscomb and got the loss. She scattered six hits, including two home runs, and gave up three runs, all earned. She struck out two and walked one.

Jordan Fortel threw the final five innings. She allowed three hits and three runs, two earned. She struck out one and walked four and did not allow an extra-base hit.

Emma Hylen, 3-4, went the distance for Iowa State. The Lady Bisons connected for five hits against her. She struck out five, walked one and hit one batter.



  • Abby Fenichel was hit by a pitch to extend her streak for reaching base to 13 games, the longest on the team this season. It is the fourth time this season Fenichel has been hit. She leads the team.
  • It was the sixth multi-hit game of the season for Turner, moving her into the team lead in the category.
  • Green extended her streak of reaching base in a game to eight and Fortel was safe for the fifth game in a row.



After facing Houston, the Lady Bisons get an early wake-up call to play Penn State at 9 a.m. Saturday followed by a rematch with Iowa State at 2 p.m.

It will be another early morning start Sunday with the Lady Bisons closing out the classic at 9 with a meeting against Northwestern.
