HOUSTON – Jordan Fortel has already won a game with her arm this season for the Lipscomb softball team, but tonight she won one with her bat as the Lady Bisons beat Houston 3-2 on Friday night thanks to a ninth-inning home run from the junior.
Lipscomb (12-5) split their two games for the day at the Cougar Classic after dropping an afternoon contest against Iowa State.
Junior Sarah Higgins started off the ninth with a sacrifice bunt, advancing fellow junior Graysen Gladden to third. Gladden at been place on second to begin the inning due to the international tiebreaker rule.
Fortel then blasted a two-run home run to center field to put the Lady Bisons ahead 3-1.
Mandy Jordan went the distance for Lipscomb on the mound, tossing seven strikeouts and allowing just four hits and two runs in the win. The junior improves to a perfect 8-0 on the year.
After seven scoreless innings, Lipscomb broke the tie in the top of the eighth. Sophomore Peyton Ward reached home due to a throwing error cause on junior Destinee Brewer’s sacrifice bunt attempt.
The Cougars tied it up in the bottom of the eighth Arielle James singled to center, scoring Mariah Garcia.
Houston added a second run in the bottom of the ninth on a passed ball, but it was not enough as the Lady Bisons hung on for the win.
- Junior Khayla Green reached base for the ninth straight game thanks to a hit in the third inning. Fortel’s home run extended her on base streak to six games.
- Senior Abby Fenichel’s streak of 13 consecutive games reaching base came to an end in the win.
- Savannah Heebner earned the loss for Houston. She is now 7-2 on the season.
Game one: Iowa State 6 Lipscomb 1
The Lipscomb Lady Bisons softball team started out the Cougar Classic on a less than happy note.
Iowa State scored at least one run in each of the first five innings, including two in the fourth, on the way to a 6-1 win Friday afternoon.
Khayla Green drove in the only run for the Lady Bisons with a single to right field that scored Hannah DeVault in the second inning.
Lead-off hitter Caitlin Turner set the pace at the plate for the Lady Bisons with a pair of doubles, both to left center field. Turner continues to lead the team in hitting with a .345 average.
Megan Gray, 2-2, pitched the first two innings for Lipscomb and got the loss. She scattered six hits, including two home runs, and gave up three runs, all earned. She struck out two and walked one.
Jordan Fortel threw the final five innings. She allowed three hits and three runs, two earned. She struck out one and walked four and did not allow an extra-base hit.
Emma Hylen, 3-4, went the distance for Iowa State. The Lady Bisons connected for five hits against her. She struck out five, walked one and hit one batter.
NEXT UP: The Lady Bisons will have another pair of games tomorrow at the Cougar Classic. First up will be a 9 a.m. tilt with Penn State, followed by a rematch with Iowa State at 2 p.m.
