Softball welcomes Upstate to open ASUN play

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb softball team is set to begin ASUN play over the weekend as the Lady Bisons welcome the three-time defending ASUN champions USC Upstate for a three-game series.  

The Lady Bisons (18-7) will begin play with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. with game two starting at approximately 3 p.m.

The two teams will close out the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.


Scouting the Spartans:

  • The Spartans enter the weekend 19-9, but on a three-game losing streak.
  • Upstate currently ranks 71st in RPI.
  • Karla Beasley leads the Spartans at the plate with a .395 batting average and seven home runs.
  • Erin Hill sports a 6-2 record and a 1.36 ERA on the mound for Upstate.



  • Last weekend, Lipscomb hosted a round robin with IUPUI and Bowling Green. Lipscomb went 3-1, with the lone loss coming against BGSU.
  • After the first RPI rankings of the season were released, Lipscomb’s 56th-place spot was one of four ASUN teams in the top-80. The Lady Bisons are 7-4 against RPI top-100 teams on the season.
  • Lipscomb started off 2018 be defeating the ACC’s Georgia Tech 1-0 thanks to a 17 strikeout performance from junior Mandy Jordan at the Sand Dollar Classic.
  • In game two of the season, junior Jordan Fortel no-hit No. 14 Ole Miss in leading the Lady Bisons to a 3-0 win over the nationally-ranked Rebels. Fortel was named the ASUN Pitcher of the Week for her efforts.
  • After the 2-0 start at the Sand Dollar Classic, Lipscomb was receiving votes in both the Collegiate Softball Poll and the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll.
  • At the EMU Spring Invite, Jordan went 2-0 over the weekend. She compiled an ERA of 1.40, threw 19 strikeouts, and allowed only seven runs and nine hits. She earned her fourth-career ASUN Pitcher of the Week for her efforts.
  • Jordan earned her second Pitcher of the Week after her two wins against IUPUI and Bowling Green. She is now 11-0 on the year with a 0.77 ERA.
  • The Lady Bisons have eight wins against “Power Five” schools this season.
  • Freshman Caitlin Turner sports a team-high .342 batting average so far this year.
  • Senior Abby Fenichel leads with three home runs and 14 RBI.
