COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb softball team notched a mid-week 5-1 win over Tennessee Tech on Wednesday, their seventh victory in the last eight games.
The Lady Bisons (29-11) took an early 2-0 lead in the second and never relinquished control of the game.
Sophomore Chloe Yeager continued her unbeaten streak as a starter for the Lady Bisons. She allowed just three hits, one run, and zero walks in five innings of work.
Junior Jordan Fortel earned her first save of the year after coming in for relief in the sixth. She retired all six batters she faced.
In the second inning, Fortel walked and sophomore Peyton Ward singled, and then both advanced on a passed ball.
Junior Destinee Brewer singled to third base, scoring Fortel and advancing Ward. Ward then scored, followed by Brewer caught stealing to end the inning with a 2-0 Lipscomb lead.
After allowing a solo Golden Eagle home run in the third, Lipscomb scored one run each in the fourth, fifth, and sixth to build a 5-1 lead.
Senior Caitlin Plocheck doubled to right center and then advanced to third on a passed ball in the fourth inning. She scored on a Ward single to right center.
In the fifth, Senior Abby Fenichel singled, advanced to second on a Hannah DeVault walk, and to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Sarah Higgins.
Lipscomb notched its final run in the sixth as Fenichel drove in a run on a sac fly. Brewer reached home after the junior walked and advanced to third on a single from freshman Caitlin Turner.
Kayla Hughes (4-9) earned the loss for Tennessee Tech who falls to 14-25.
- Fenichel notched her 30th RBI of the season. She leads the team.
- Ward and Turner each went 2-4 in the win to lead the team in hits.
- Turner, Plocheck, and Ward extended their hit streaks to four games.
- Fortel has the longest current reached-base streak at six games. She walked three times in the game.
- Ward stole her 17th base, the most on the team.
- Fortel notched her first stolen base of the year.
