Softball splits doubleheader with FGCU after 9-1 win

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb softball team split a doubleheader with FCGU on Saturday thanks to a 9-1 win in six innings in game two of the three-game series.

The Lady Bisons (31-14, 9-7) notched more runs and hits (15) in game two than the two teams combined for in game one.

FGCU (34-15, 8-6) struck first with a run in the second inning. Kelsey Huff singled up the middle to score Kate Kelly to take a 1-0 lead.

In the third, senior Abby Fenichel singled, junior Jordan Fortel reached with a bunt, and junior Sarah Higgins advanced Fenichel with a sacrifice fly.

Senior Caitlin Plocheck singled to score Fenichel and tie the game at 1-1.

Sophomore Peyton Ward then doubled, driving home Fortel and Plocheck to put Lipscomb ahead 3-1.

In the fourth, Lipscomb added two more runs. Junior Graysen Gladden was hit by a pitch, and Fortel reached on a fielder’s choice.

Higgins and Plocheck then proceeded to hit back-to-back singles to score Gladden and Fortel and give Lipscomb a 5-1 lead.

Lipscomb finished the game off in the sixth with four more runs.  

Fortel reached with a single, Higgins walked, and redshirt-sophomore Jenna Pealor was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Ward reached on an error to score Fortel, junior Khayla Green singled to score Higgins, and junior Destinee Brewer singled to score Ward and sophomore Hannah DeVault who had re-entered for Pealor.  

Sophomore Chloe Yeager (8-2) went the full six innings for Lipscomb, allowing just six hits and one walk.

Marissa Mesiemore (10-4) earned the loss for FGCU after allowing five runs in 1.1 innings.


GAME ONE: FGCU 1 Lipscomb 0

Lipscomb and FGCU battled in a pitcher’s duel in game one as the two sides combined for just nine hits and one total run in the Eagles 1-0 win.

The Eagles notched the game’s lone run in the top of the six. After five scoreless innings, Brittany McGuire reached on a fielder’s choice to score pinch runner Emily Demurias for the go-ahead run.

Both starting pitchers went the distance. FGCU’s Riley Randolph (14-6) earned the win after allowing five hits and tossing nine strikeouts in the shutout of the Lady Bisons.

Junior Mandy Jordan took the loss for Lipscomb despite carrying a no hitter into the fourth inning. She allowed just four hits and two walks and pitched five strikeouts.

Centerfielder Destinee Brewer made a pair of acrobatic catches to aide Jordan’s output.

Junior Graysen Gladden notched a team-high two hits in our at bats.



  • Plocheck, Ward, and Brewer each notched two RBI in game two. Plocheck has four multi-RBI games on the year. Ward has three, and Brewer has two.
  • Fortel went 3-4 at bat to lead the team. It was her seventh multi-hit game of the year.
  • Fenichel, Plocheck, Ward, Green, and Brewer each notched two hits.
  • Fenichel has 12 multi-hit games, Plocheck has 10, Ward has five, Green has four, and Brewer has three.
  • Fenichel’s team-best hit streak is at eight games after the doubleheader.
  • Green stole her 10th base of the season.
