Softball defeats WKU on road in regular season finale

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lipscomb softball team closed the regular season on a strong note as the Lady Bisons defeated Western Kentucky 5-4 on the road on Thursday night.

Lipscomb (32-15) built a 5-1 lead through six, before WKU (26-24) added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead down to one.

The Hilltoppers struck first in the third as Brittany Vaughn singled to score Morgan McElroy.

Junior Sarah Higgins responded immediately with a solo home run to lead off the third fourth inning, tying the game at 1-1.

Lipscomb took a 2-1 lead as junior Graysen Gladden lined out to third with the bases loaded, scoring sophomore Hannah DeVault.
In the top of the six, Lipscomb added three runs to its lead.

After a single from junior Khayla Green and Brewer reaching on a fielder’s choice, Gladden tripled to clear the bases.

Junior Jordan Fortel then singled to send Gladden home.

WKU added three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth.

Jordan Thomas singled to score Maddie Bowlds, Rebekah Engelhardt doubled to score Thomas, and Kelsey McGuffin singled to score Vaughn.

Sophomore Chloe Yeager (9-2) earned the win for Lipscomb after allowing eight hits, four runs, and five walks in five innings.

Fortel earns the save after 1.1 innings pitched, allowing three hits and no runs.

 

QUICK HITS:

  • Gladden, Higgins, Fortel, and DeVault each notched two hits to lead the team.
  • Higgins leads the team with 16 multi-hit games. DeVault has 10. Fortel and Gladden have eight.
  • Senior Abby Fenichel extended her team-best reached –base streak to 10 games.
  • Green now has a team-best four game streak going.
  • Gladden stole her 12th base of the season.

 

NEXT UP: The Lady Bisons will head down to DeLand, Florida for the ASUN Tournament starting on May 9th. Lipscomb’s first round opponent has yet to be determined.
