Softball set to take on No. 1 Florida State at Unconquered Invite

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Lipscomb softball coach Kristin Ryman has never been shy about challenging her teams in the past.

This weekend they enter the Unconquered Invitational hosted by Florida State, the 2018 NCAA National Champion and the No. 1 team in the nation this season. The Lady Bisons will play them twice.

“They are No. 1 for a reason,” Ryman said. “I think it will be a really neat opportunity for our girls and for our program to just go out and compete.

“I feel confident with what we bring to the table. I think when we are clicking on all cylinders we can stay right there and give ourselves a chance to win. Your goal is to keep it close and give yourself a shot at the end.”

The Lady Bisons, 6-4, have an early start Friday morning at JoAnne Graf Field when they face Samford, 4-7, at 9. At 4:30 p.m. the Lady Bisons will meet Florida State, 12-0.

Ryman sees no weaknesses in the Florida State lineup.

“Anytime you are playing the No. 1 team in the nation, and playing them twice, makes for a tough weekend,” Ryman said. “They do everything well.

“They hit extremely well. They have a lot of power throughout their lineup. They are all very athletic and that is the thing that stands out to me the most.”

Pitching is also outstanding. Meghan King leads the team with a 6-0 record and a 0.99 earned run average. Kathryn Sandercock is 5-0 with a 1.35 ERA.

“Meghan King is the veteran who did most of the damage for them last year in the World Series,” Ryman said. “She is a lefty. She throws hard with really good movement.

“Sandercock is a freshman. She is extremely talented in her own right.”

Katie Turner earned her first win in her first college start, throwing a one-hitter in a 7-0 shutout of Samford Feb. 8 in the Cowgirl Classic at McNeese State. She gave up one hit, walked one and struck out nine. Her performance earned her the first ASUN Pitcher of the Week honor of the season.

“Samford is athletic as well,” Ryman said. “We know what they bring to the table. They know what we bring to the table.

“There are not many surprises between the two of us anymore. They are going to scrap and fight.”

  • Katie Turner, 4-1, enters the weekend rated first in the ASUN in wins with four. She is fifth in the league with a 1.54 earned run average.
  • Mandy Jordan is second in the ASUN in strikeouts with 27. Megan Gray is fourth with 25.
  • Katie Turner has been a double threat for the Lady Bisons. She is tied for third in the ASUN with a .421 batting average.
  • Hannah DeVault is tied for third in the conference in runs batted in with seven.
  • Abby Davis is tied for first in the ASUN with six stolen bases. Destinee Brewer is in second with five.
  • Peyton Ward leads the team with 11 runs scored and is tied with Jordan Fortel for first in hits with 13.
  • Fortel enters the weekend with two streaks on the line. She has hit safely in her last seven games and has reached base in her last eight games.
  • Ward has a six-game hitting streak and Pealor has hits in her last four games.
  • The Lady Bisons have faced one nationally-ranked team this season, falling 5-0 to then 14th-rated Arkansas in the Cowgirl Classic.
  • Lipscomb and Elon, 6-2, are tied 1-1 in the all-time series. The last time they played each other was in 2007.
  • Florida State is 6-0 at home this season.

The Lady Bisons meet Florida State again Saturday at 2 p.m. They end the day against Elon at 4:30.

Sunday they close out the weekend with a rematch with Elon at 9 a.m.
