TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Two innings spelled the difference for the Lipscomb Lady Bisons in their rematch with Florida State.
Saturday afternoon host Florida State scored five runs in the first and nine more in the fourth to take a 14-2 win over Lipscomb in day two of the Unconquered Invitational at JoAnne Graf Field. Lipscomb is 7-6. Florida State, ranked No. 1 in the country, is 16-0.
Florida State connected for 14 hits, but only two were for extra bases – a two-run homer in the first and a two-run double in the fourth.
The Lady Bisons opened the game with a first inning run. Peyton Ward reached base on an infield error and moved to second in a throwing error. She scored on a single up the middle by Jordan Fortel.
In the third Ward reached on a single to left field and scored on a single to through the left side by Hannah DeVault.
Mandy Jordan, 2-3, opened for Lipscomb. She gave up 10 hits and 10 runs, nine earned. She struck out two and walked two.
Chloe Rogers replaced Jordan in the fourth. She faced seven batters and allowed four hits and four runs, all earned, She also walked a batter.
Fortel closed out the fourth facing on batter and forced a ground out.
- Fortel extended her team-leading hitting streak to 10 games. She has also reached base in the last 11 games.
- It was the second appearance in the circle of the year and in her softball career for Rogers.
- Caitlin Turner has three doubles.
- Fortel leads the Lady Bisons with nine runs batted in. DeVault has knocked in eight runners.
The Lady Bisons close out the Unconquered Invitational with two games against Elon. The two play today at 4:30 and Sunday at 9 a.m.
