Lady Bisons set for first ASUN series

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The anticipation and excitement level for the start of the ASUN portion of the season has been high. Lipscomb coach Kristin Ryman thinks her team is prepared for the challenge.

The Lady Bisons, 19-9-1, open the ASUN portion of the season Saturday at noon at Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium against the Liberty Flames, 17-12, 1-2 in the conference.  Liberty, a newcomer to the conference, is the preseason favorite to win the ASUN based on a poll of coaches.

“Liberty is tough to play on their home field,” Ryman said. “They have a very good team and return most of the players from last year’s team which was one game away from going to a Super Regional.

“Liberty started with a really tough schedule. They put themselves out there, just like we have, to face tough competition so their record is a little misleading. They play at a high level and have played some very good teams close.”

Both teams played this week. Lipscomb lost 9-7 to No. 24 Virginia Tech Wednesday. Liberty fell 1-0 to No. 5-ranked Tennessee in a home game Tuesday.

Julia DiMartino is Liberty’s top pitcher with a 9-6 record and a 1.15 earned run average. She has struck out 85 batters in 91.2 innings. She threw against Tennessee.

“DiMartino is one of the best pitchers in the country,” Ryman said. “She throws a variety of pitches and she moves the ball well.

“Our offense has been doing some great things. But runs could be hard to come by this weekend. We are going to have to stay patient and try to figure out their pitchers.”

The Flames are 10-1 and have outscored their opponents 71-4 at home this season.

“We know we need to come in there as the aggressor. We need to play our game and stick to our game plan.

“We both have good pitching; good hitting and we both play good defense. They are a good team, but we are too.”

SCOUTING LIBERTY

  • Liberty opened conference play at Kennesaw State and lost two of the three games in the series.
  • The loss to Liberty ended a 28-game home winning streak. It was a school record and was also the second longest active home winning streak in NCAA Division I.
  • Liberty associate head coach Paige Cassady was the pitching coach for Lipscomb in 2013.
  • Liberty has four players batting higher than .300. Amber Bishop leads with a .375 average followed by Autumn Bishop (.355), Madison Via (.338) and Sarah Robertson (.320). The Bishops are twins.
  • Amber Bishop leads the Flames in home runs with six and is tied for the lead in runs batted in with 14. She also leads the team with eight doubles.
  • Chase Cassady is 4-1 with a 2.03 ERA. She has posted 57 strikeouts in 51.2 innings.
  • The two teams have played only one previous time in softball, a 1-0 win by Liberty in 2005.
