Softball splits doubleheader with UNA

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb softball team started off its weekend series with North Alabama by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday at Draper Diamond, as the Bisons took the first game 4-1 and the Lions won round two 5-4.

Sunday’s rubber match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.

The Lady Bisons (28-13-1, 7-4 ASUN) began the day strong, taking a 4-0 lead on UNA (18-15, 4-7) in the first game before giving up a lone run in the seventh.

In the third inning, junior Peyton Ward reached base on a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a groundout from Jordan Fortel.

Junior Hannah DeVault then blasted a home run to left field to give the Lady Bisons a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, Sarah Higgins and Destinee Brewer both walked, and then Caitlin Turner pinch ran for Higgins, setting up a two-run double to right center for Ward which put the Lady Bisons ahead 4-0.

Veronica Westfall singled to score Madison Daniel in the seventh, but it was too little too late for the Lions.

Senior Mandy Jordan (11-7) came away with the win, giving up eight hits and dealing eight strikeouts in the complete-game outing.

Sidney Revels (3-3) earned the loss for North Alabama.

In game two, UNA scored two runs in the second inning as Danielle de Ruiter singled to score Harley Stokes and Jessie Brown reached home on a fielder’s choice by Madison Daniel.

Lipscomb responded with back-to-back doubles. First, redshirt junior Jenna Pealor hit a ground-rule double and then Pealor scored on a blast from senior Sarah Higgins.

The Lady Bisons scored again in the third to even the game up at 2-2. The run again came from a double as DeVault sent Fortel to home plate.

The two teams traded two-run outings in the fifth. Stokes homered to left center, scoring Brown, to put UNA ahead 4-2, but Lipscomb tied it back up at 4-4 as senior Graysen Gladden tripled to score Ward and Fortel hit a sacrifice fly to score Gladden.

The Lions clinched the win in the sixth inning Westfall reached on a bases-loaded error to send de Ruiter in for the go-ahead run.

Freshman Katie Turner pitched the first five innings for Lipscomb, allowing eight hits and four runs, but junior Chloe Yeager (3-1) took the loss after giving up the game-winning in her two innings of work.

Megan Garst (10-5) earned the win for the Lions, allowing six hits and all four Bison runs in six innings. She pitched four strikeouts and four walks.

  • Michelle Moore earned a save in game two for UNA.
  • DeVault’s two doubles on the day improves her team-best mark to 16. She also leads the team with eight home runs after Saturday’s blast.
  • DeVault’s ASUN-leading RBI count rose to 39. She has reached base in 11 straight games and got a hit in eight straight, both team-best marks.
  • Higgins has now reached bases in nine game, with Ward and senior Khayla green reaching safely in seven consecutive.
  • Gladden’s triple was her third of the season, the most on the team.
  • Ward raised her team-best stolen base count to 22. Green swiped her 11th, but was also caught stealing for the first time this season. Freshman Amy Vetula stole her sixth.
