Softball signs six to 2020 class

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb softball team and head coach Kristin Ryman have announced the signing of six student-athletes to the 2020 class.

"We LOVE this class,” Lipscomb softball head coach Kristin Ryman said. “They are not only great players, but they come from very supportive families, and they are going to blend right in with the culture we have created here. They are strong athletes, but they are also great teammates, and we know they will compete right away. The goal every year is to bring in freshmen who can raise the bar and push our older players to be better. We feel great about how this class came together, and we cannot wait to get them here.

“On top of all of their accolades and talents on the field, they are also strong students and will fit right in with the mission of our program and school. These are girls who truly want to be the best versions of themselves, and they are choosing Lipscomb for all the right reasons. They are going to be difference-makers early in their careers, and we are excited about the future of our program with them in it."

Learn more about the six signees from the 2020 class below:

Makayla Alvey | IF | Dandridge, Tenn. | Jefferson County HS

  • 1x All-State
  • 2x All-Region in basketball
  • Multi-time All-District in softball, basketball, and volleyball
  • 4x letter winner in three different sports
  • 2019 state champion in softball and volleyball
  • Ryman’s thoughts: “Mak is a player who is just scratching the surface of her abilities. She is a rare 3-sport athlete and is extremely well-rounded. She is a triple threat at the plate, and brings a quickness, strong arm, and presence in the middle infield. Mak is the type of player who will find her way onto the field early in her career because she is so versatile and she plays the game the right way. She also reminds me a little bit of Peyton Ward with how she plays with a fire and passion. She has been a natural leader for every team she has played on, and when she is on the field, it is hard not to notice her. Simply put, Mak is a winner, and I can't wait to coach her."

Laine Barefoot | P | Louisburg, N.C. | Louisburg HS

  • 2x All-State
  • 2x All-Region
  • 3x All-District
  • 2x MVP
  • 2018 state champion runner-up
  • Ryman’s thoughts: “We are really looking forward to seeing Laine in purple and gold! She is someone we feel can step in and throw some good innings right away for us, and she will be an outstanding compliment to our returning pitching staff. Laine is being tested at a very high level of travel ball, and she knows how to challenge hitters and get outs. Her tools are only going to improve, and I cannot wait to see her development over the next few years. She knows how to pitch to her strengths, and she is going to be a big part of our pitching staff from the get-go. Her journey to Lipscomb has already been a cool one, and we are excited to be a part of her future story."

Katelyn Belding | IF | Hayden, Ala. | Hayden HS

  • 1x All-State
  • 4x letter winner
  • 2019 state champions with Hayden HS
  • Colorado Sparkler Powerpool champions with Birmingham Vipers
  • North-South All Star
  • Ryman’s thoughts: “KK is another player who has a chance to be really special. She has been a major part of a lot of winning teams, and that is no surprise. She is a pure athlete with the ability & arm to play all over the field, and we expect her to compete right away. What sets her apart from a lot of middle infielders is not only her ability to hit for a high average, but her ability to hit for power. We know KK can be an immediate impact, and she has not even come close to reaching her peak yet (which is exciting for us). She is going to be a fun player to watch, and I look forward to coaching her."

Jessica Bush | C/IF | Bowling Green, Ky. | South Warren HS

  • 2x All-Region
  • 1x All-District
  • 2019 team captain
  • 2x team MVP
  • 5x softball letter winner and 4x basketball letter winner
  • Ryman’s thoughts: "Jess is a difference-maker type of player. She is a leader who can spark a team with her power hitting or her quickness behind the plate. She will be the player who will sneak up on people because of her small stature, but Jess can absolutely play and she plays the game hard. One of the things I am most excited about with her is that she truly wants to learn, and she is a student of the game. Her high standards, strong work ethic, & competitiveness are going to help her excel at this level, and will give her an edge early in her career. I am extremely excited about coaching Jess and seeing her take off at this level."

Teagan Dobson | C/IF | Chandler, Ariz. | Hamilton HS

  • 2x All-Region
  • 2x All-District
  • 2x MVP
  • 4x letter winner
  • 2016-17 Arizona state championship with Hamilton HS
  • Ryman’s thoughts: “I am so excited to coach Teagan!  She has a chance to be a star before her career is over, and her maturity will help her early on in her career. Her power at the plate is impressive, and we definitely see her as a polished hitter who can produce in the middle of our order. Defensively, her arm strength & quick release will make her an immediate impact, and she will compete both behind the plate & at the corners. Teagan is a player who has flown under the radar a bit, but she has played with and against the best. With her strong travel ball and Australian Junior National Team experience, she will be a seasoned player when she arrives. I cannot wait to get her to Nashville!"

Joie Giarrizzo | OF | Clarksville, Tenn. | Clarksville Academy

  • 3x All-District
  • 3x Team Captain
  • 2x MVP
  • 3x Letter winner
  • USA Softball Junior Olympic Cup 2019 18u Champions with the Tennessee Fury
  • Ryman’s thoughts: “Joie was our very first commit in this class, and I am really looking forward to having her in my program every day. She is the consummate teammate and person. She is gritty & competitive, and she plays the game the right way. She is one of the most coachable & mature kids I have ever encountered in the recruiting process, and she is just tipping the iceberg with what she is capable of achieving. Joie is a very athletic outfielder who can play any of those positions with her arm and reactions. Offensively, she keeps getting stronger and stronger as a left-handed hitter. We truly believe she has a big future ahead of her.”
