The Gardner-Webb-Campbell trip is always a challenge, no matter what the sport.
The Lady Bisons volleyball team made the trip a little bit brighter Friday night with a 3-0 sweep of Gardner-Webb. It was the third 3-0 sweep in a row for the Lady Bisons who have won four games in a row, including all three in the Atlantic Sun.
The games were close with the Lady Bisons prevailing 33-31 in game one, 30-24 in game two and 31-29 in the final game.
"We didn't really play as well as we would have liked, but a lot of that was because Gardner-Webb was because Gardner-Webb put a lot of pressure on us defensively," said Lipscomb Coach Brandon Rosenthal. "I knew we were in for a battle, and Gardner-Webb gave us one."
The third game was the biggest challenge with the Lady Bisons fighting back from an eight-point deficit. Grace Gilmore came off the bench and served an ace to give the Lady Bisons the victory.
"She had not played in the game," Rosenthal said. "That was the only point she was involved in. She came in and took care of business."
It was ironic that Gilmore would serve an ace for the win since that was the only ace of the match for the Lady Bisons who committed 12 service errors.
Cara Wilber continued to be a strong presence for the Lady Bisons with a match-high 20 kills for a .302 hitting percentage. She also recorded a double-double with 13 digs. Jessica Turner also put in another strong performance with 14 kills. Lindsey Rutherford and Alex Scruggs each finished with nine.
The Lady Bisons held a 56-40 advantage over Gardner-Webb in kills. The Lady Bisons finished with .245 hitting percentage for the match.
The Lady Bisons close out the trip Saturday with a visit to A-Sun foe Campbell.
"This is a tough trip," Rosenthal said. "It is a long ride. It has been raining the whole time we have been here, But now we are concentrating on Campbell, not how many games we have won in a row."
