It was a great match that would have been even greater had the Lady Bisons been on the winning side.
The Lady Bisons lost 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena to a visiting Florida Atlantic team by scores of 30-27, 30-25 and 30-20. It was the last A-Sun home game of the season for the Lady Bisons who still have two non-conference games on the home schedule as well as conference road trips to North Florida and Jacksonville.
"I think our players walked away with a better understanding of the competition," said Lipscomb Coach Brandon Rosenthal. "FAU is a good team. Maybe I pumped them up too much. Not to take anything away from FAU, but we were just one step away.
"It was a good match. We came up on the short end."
In game one the Lady Bisons got off to a slow defensive start but recovered and held the lead for much of the game. FAU tied the game at 22-22 and then moved ahead 23-22, a lead they would not give up.
In game two FAU held a small advantage most of the game with the score tied at 17-17. Again, FAU took an 18-17 lead and never looked back, with their biggest lead at five points at 25-20 and the final score.
"The first two games were great," Rosenthal said. "We played extremely well, but we got away from the things we were trying to do. We started trying to do too much and it backfired. We have to stay within our game plan, and we did that very well in the first game."
The Lady Bisons got the early jump in game three with a 4-1 advantage. They lead until FAU took over at 10-9. FAU continued to build on that lead, holding an 11-point advantage at 29-18.
"That game was a matter of passing," Rosenthal said. "That is going to happen, but it is disappointing that it did. We play some freshman and they are going to make freshman mistakes."
"Cara played extremely well against a pretty big blocker," Rosenthal said. "She moved the ball around better than I have seen all season."
"We played with a lot of effort," Rosenthal said. "We blocked extremely well against a taller and bigger team. We just didn't do enough of the little things we need to do."
FAU's Kelly Paiva had a match-high 20 kills and added 14 digs. Justine Petry chipped in 11 kills for FAU and Makra Condill had 13 digs,
FAU improved to 22-2, 6-0 in the A-Sun. The Lady Bisons are 10-15, 5-2 in the conference.
