The Lady Bisons knew that Tennessee-Martin would be a challenge and that is exactly what they got.
The Lady Bisons beat visiting Tennessee-Martin 3-2 in five games at Allen Arena, winning the first game 30-27, losing the second game 30-24, winning game three 30-25 and losing game four 30-26. In game five the Lady Bisons 15-10.
"They are ranked ahead of us points-wise. It was a great win for us. They were great games. We were prepared and that showed. The last game we hit .524 with 11 kills and no errors. Anyone who can ready a box score could realize that when we control our hitting errors we are tough to beat."
The Lady Bisons won with a balanced attack with four players in double figures in kills. Jessica Enderle had a personal season-high 19 kills which also tied the match-high. Ashley Cox posted a personal season-high 18 kills. Alex Scruggs added 17 kills and Lindsey Rutherford pitched in with 13.
In addition to her kills total Scruggs five service aces, three blocks and a .324 hitting percentage.
"Jess Enderle had a tremendous match and Alex was fantastic," said Rosenthal. "We mixed up our lines. We got great production our of Jess and Ashley. Cara Wilber did a good job on the back row."
"Jessica Turner is a tremendous defensive player," said Rosenthal. "It is a confidence thing where she is able to step on the court and know she belongs there."
Rosenthal also praised the work of Samantha Sullivan in game five.
"I thought Sam had a tremendous game five," said Rosenthal. "She really, really fooled their blockers. She was the key to game five."
Jamie Hollins of Tennessee-Martin made 19 kills to tie for the match high. She also made a double-double with 11 digs. Taylor Noland added 12 kills.
Anna Gautreau led Tennessee-Martin with 30 digs.
"Effort-wise we have been talking about all-out play," said Rosenthal. "The play that stands out for me is in the fifth game when Alex runs and slides to the net on broken play to save the ball. I would have expected that out of someone other than our middles, but we have been preaching that no matter who you are if you can come up with the ball then do it.
"That's what it takes. It takes a selflessness that says I can get it done. So let's go after it."
The Lady Bisons are off the rest of the week. Their next game is Oct. 31 at Allen Arena against Tennessee State at 7.
