The Lady Bisons needed a boost and they got one in a big way.
Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena the Lady Bisons swept USC Upstate 3-0. USC Upstate is one of two new members of the Atlantic Sun Conference this season. The Lady Bisons won by scores of 30-20, 30-16 and 30-26.
"Looking across the court at USC Upstate was about where our program was five years ago in making the transition," Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. "It's good to see where we are after five years, but it is good to see where we are today after what we have gone through in our last two conference matches.
"It is good to get a win like this. We have learned our lesson coming off of two five-game losses. That was yesterday. We are moving forward. The challenge still lies ahead of us."
The Lady Bisons did get a scare in the final game of the match, trailing 24-23 before taking over at the end.
"We talk about team effort and ultimately it was a team effort," Rosenthal said. "At the end we got a little lazy. But we refocused.
"We are playing a little too loose at times where one point turns into two, three or four points for the other team. Being behind by four points is not that bad, but it is when those four points happen. As the game reaches into the 20s we have to buckle down,"
The Lady Bisons were led in kills by senior outside hitter Jessica Enderle who came off the bench to make 14, a match high.
"It is good that we can bring someone in off the bench and have that kind of influence," Rosenthal said.
Also putting in a solid effort in a reserve role was sophomore middle blocker Amy Trykowski.
"Amy did a tremendous job coming off the bench," Rosenthal said. "It is hard to do. We're using her in a couple of different spots, but I really credit her and the hard work she has put in. Obviously, you want to play and start and get that rhythm going"
Also in double figures in kills for the Lady Bisons was junior outside hitter Sarah Snider with 11.
Senior libero Ann Mullins had a match-high 20 digs for the Lady Bisons.
Alex Scruggs, a senior middle blocker, made six service aces, a match high and a season-high.
Sandra Campbell finished with 12 kills for USC Upstate. Jesicah Ambrisco added 11.
The Lady Bisons are 7-9 overall, 1-2 in the conference. USC Upstate is 5-11, 0-4 in the conference.
"Sometimes we worry about things we can't control," Rosenthal said. "We have talked a lot about that the past couple of days. We have to control what we can control both on and off the court,"
The home stand continues for the Lady Bisons who will face Stetson at Allen Arena Friday at 7 in another Atlantic Sun match.
