Saturday, September 18, 2010The Lipscomb Lady Bisons are strictly business in volleyball matches. So they did what a lot of businesses do when things go wrong _ they called a meeting.
In the aftermath of Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Western Kentucky in the second day of the Billiken Invitational the Lady Bisons called a players only meeting.
“Like any team, when you are faced with a new challenge, there is the question of what do we need to do,” Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It wasn’t a long meeting. But they worked some things out themselves. I think that is a good sign.
“I don’t think there is a cause for panic. We have to get back to what we know best.”
The Lady Bisons started out 12-6 in the first set against Western Kentucky, but from there things went from bad to worse. The Lady Bisons lost set 1 25-20, set 2 25-12 and set three 25-21.
“We had a six-point lead and then a couple of things didn’t go our way,” Rosenthal said. “Boom, the next thing you know that set is tied and we can’t find our way out of it. We have to find a way.
“Western did a nice job. Unfortunately, I didn’t think we competed the way we needed to compete.”
Outside hitter Meghan Hinemeyer and middle blocker Alex Kelly tied for team lead in kills with nine each. Kelly led the Lady Bisons in digs with 11. Hinemeyer added 10.
The Lady Bisons opened the tournament Friday night with a 3-1 loss to host St. Louis.
The last time the Lady Bisons lost two matches in row was Aug. 30 at Tennessee followed by another loss at Kansas Sept. 4.
Western Kentucky, led by 16 kills from Tiffany Elmore, had a .333 hitting percentage. The Lady Bisons posted a .196 hitting percentage.
Both Lipscomb and Western Kentucky are 9-4. The Lady Bisons only lost four games last season.
The Lady Bisons close out the tournament Saturday against Marshall at 4:30.
“We have sense of urgency to clean up our game,” Rosenthal said. “As far as a game plan against Marshall we are more focused on what we are going to be doing. We have to get better on our side of the net before we worry about all of the other things.”
