Western Kentucky too tough to tame for Lady Bisons

Tuesday, September 06, 2011

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After a solid performance in last weekend’s inaugural Lipscomb Invitational tournament, the Lipscomb volleyball team struggled on Tuesday night at Allen Arena falling 3-0 (14-25, 15-25, 20-25) to Western Kentucky.

“The truth be told, Western Kentucky is a great program,” noted Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal.  “Always have been and as long as Travis Hudson, their coach, is there they will be.   My hat goes off to them.  They are a program we strive to be like.”

The Hilltoppers (6-1) came out on fire in the opening set taking the first seven points of the contest.  The Lipscomb offense would finally come alive but that is as close as the Lady Bisons (2-5) would come in the opening set eventually falling 25-10.

“We just didn’t come to play tonight,” said Rosenthal.  “We played scared and WKU took advantage of that,” said Rosenthal.  “We’ve got to do something better than what we did tonight.  It’s a young team but it’s not an excuse and we’ll go back to work tomorrow.”

The second set saw the Lady Bisons get off to a much better start but Western Kentucky finished the stanza off strong and pulled away down the stretch.  The final frame saw the Lady Bisons jump out in front and eventually lead 11-7 but the Hilltoppers came storming back on a 10-2 run to take control of the frame.

Western Kentucky outhit Lipscomb .248 to .076 in the contest with Jordyn Skinner leading the way with 10 kills.  Reigning A-Sun Player of the Week, Katie Rose, led Lipscomb with seven kills on the night.

The Lady Bisons hit the road again this weekend with three tough matches ahead in the Golden Dome Invitational in South Bend, Ind., starting on Friday.
