NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sitting atop the Atlantic Sun Conference standings, the Lipscomb volleyball team returns to the court this weekend after an eight-day layoff visiting Jacksonville on Friday night before a Saturday afternoon contest at North Florida to conclude the weekend.
The Lady Bisons head to the Sunshine State riding a nine-game winning streak and a perfect 5-0 record in A-Sun play. Lipscomb is 11-6 overall on the season.
“We started out the year on the road and have been at home the last couple of weekends, so it’s been kind of nice,” said Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal. “The Florida trip is a nice trip. Kind of like when team’s come to Nashville you can stay in one hotel and not have to travel in between. The reality of this trip is, it’s tough. Jacksonville’s a really hard place to play. They produce some great crowds and their gym is a little bit smaller so they’re right on you.”
Lipscomb heads into the weekend leading the league in hitting (.234), assists (12.75/set) and kills (13.87/set). The Lady Bisons also lead the league in opponent hitting percentage in A-Sun contests holding foes to a .155 mark.
The Dolphins enter the weekend 3-3 in A-Sun play and 10-11 overall. Alison Loeppky and Alliya Drzewiecki lead the way offensively for Jacksonville while Kendall Courntey is the squad’s top defensive player.
“Jacksonville’s been up and down a little bit so far,” said Rosenthal. “You watch tape on them and you can see where they’re talented. They’re really dangerous. It’s easy to see why they’re winning matches. The A-Sun is one of those conferences that you’ve got to take every match really seriously.”
The Ospreys welcome Lipscomb with a 8-12 mark on the season and a league record of 2-4 in 2011. Paige Pridgeon is the offensive force for UNF averaging 3.36 kills per set, a number that ranks fifth best in the conference. The veteran is also active on defense making 2.48 digs per set.
“UNF poses some problems because of some really big servers,” said Rosenthal. “They’ve got 3-4 jump servers and they can change a match depending on how well they’re serving. Paige Pridgeon on the outside is a force to be reckoned with. She’s shown that over the last couple of years. “
