ROSE - 1
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Behind a 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-15) sweep of homestanding USC Upstate, the Lispcomb volleyball team claimed a share of their third-straight Atlantic Sun regular-season championship on Saturday afternoon at the Hodge Center in Spartanburg.
With the win over the Spartans (8-21, 2-11 A-Sun) the Lady Bisons (18-9) finish the 2011 A-Sun slate 11-2 in league action tying with Belmont for top honors in the league.
“I’m happy that we went out and took care of business,” said Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal. “Last night is one of those games that we could easily focus on what we didn’t do right but we didn’t do that today. I’m proud of the girls that they went out and won another championship and their hard work to get to this point.”
Freshmen Jewell Dobson and Lauren Ford led Lipscomb offensively with each notching 13 kills on the afternoon. Both hit over .400 on the afternoon as Lipscomb hit .345 with Ford hitting .448 and Dobson .409.
“Our setters did a really nice job of distributing the ball today,” said Rosenthal. “Our outsides played well offensively and defensively. Both Lauren and Jewell did a nice really nice job and have to give credit to Kaycee Green. We’ve asked her to step it up defensively and I’m excited to see that. “
Sophomore libero Stephanie Rex lead the Lady Bisons with 13 digs and was joined in double figure digs by freshman Megan Stout with 10.
Improving to a perfect 8-0 all-time against Upstate, the Lady Bisons held the Spartans to a .160 hitting mark and outdug Upstate 55-37.
“It’s very exciting to go in the tournament with a bye,” said Rosenthal. “One of the things we’ve talked about is the numbers in front of the names don’t mean anything come tournament time. We just have to go out and take care of business. “
The Lady Bisons return home this week to host the 2011 Atlantic Sun Volleyball Championship at Allen Arena on Thursday-Saturday. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, the Lady Bisons have secured a first-round bye and will meet the winner of the FGCU-North Florida quarterfinal tilt on Friday at 5 p.m..
