Rosenthal looking for right fit for volleyball

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb volleyball coach Brandon Rosenthal has recently had a little taste of what Santa Claus deals with each year.

Rosenthal has received more than 50 applications for the assistant coach job left vacant after Samantha Sullivan left the position in order to return to California and get married. He has been busy checking his list, and checking some names twice, as he trims the list to a reasonable number for telephone and in-person interviews.

When Rosenthal went to the NCAA Final Four for volleyball, which was also the site for the annual coaches’ convention, he was pleasantly surprised with the interest the position received.

“At the end of the period I talked with 12 or 15 candidates,” Rosenthal said. “I was really impressed with the quality of the people who called or asked to talk.”

Rosenthal’s Lady Bison have been to the NCAA Tournament three years in a row and four of the last five seasons. Rather than rest on his laurels Rosenthal is looking for an assistant that will bring in new ideas and challenge him.

“I want to be pushed,” Rosenthal said. “A lot of times coaches who have been successful want to continue on the same path. But I am quite the opposite. I want to see what else is out there.”

Like most college programs recruiting is the key to the success of the Lady Bison.

“We want someone who can carry on what we have done so far,” Rosenthal said. “I think everybody can recognize talent but the relationship side with club coaches, club directors and high school coaches is really important.

“I’m looking for someone who is really personable. I want somebody that people will not only enjoy around, but that they will be looking forward to seeing each time.”

Above all, Rosenthal wants to find someone he can trust, which was one of the strongest bonds he had with Sullivan. He also wants to find someone who wants to be part of the Lipscomb program and not simply be seeking a job.

“That’s where the gut comes in,” Rosenthal said.

Rosenthal is already talking with some candidates formally over the telephone. He would like to have someone in place by Jan. 31.

“It’s a daunting task from both the sheer number of people and the quality,” Rosenthal said. “I would like to bring three-to-five candidates to campus.

“At the end of the day, I am really excited about it. There is going to be a new person sitting next door. And we are going to start this process as to where this program is going to go. That is a neat thing for me.”
