NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb volleyball team finishes its homestand this weekend and plays the last two home Atlantic Sun Conference matches of the regular season against Kennesaw State Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Mercer Saturday at 2 p.m.
The Lady Bisons have posted a perfect 3-0 record in the first three matches of the current five-match homestand.
Both Georgia teams are fighting to make it to the tournament. They are 5-9 in the conference and tied for the last and final spot.
“You have four or five teams fighting for the last couple of spots,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It should be interesting."
LU needs a win on Friday night and an ETSU loss to Florida Gulf Coast to clinch one of the top two seeds in the A-Sun Tournament.
“It’s a chance for us to really solidify things within the conference tournament,” Rosenthal said. “It’s no secret that we are trying to secure a top two seed that will give us a bye to the semis.”
The Lady Bisons are riding a four-match winning streak after sweeping 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-22) against Northern Kentucky on Tuesday night. It was the first sweep against the Norse this season.
Libero Stephanie Rex had 14 digs against NKU. Her last dig of the match was her 1,000th of her career. The junior is the fifth Lady Bison to reach the milestone.
Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle had 15 kills, a career-high and a match-high against NKU. Dotson had her 10th double-double of the season, her 23rd of her career, with 40 assists, 12 digs and five kills, one shy of her career-high.
Outside hitter Kaycee Green was named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Player of the Week for volleyball on Tuesday.
Green led the team in kills, and had at least 15 kills in each match.
Green had 32 total kills, four blocks, seven digs, a 5.33 kills per set and a hitting percentage of .279.
The Kennesaw State match will be senior day for Green. The Cookeville, Tenn., native ranks second in school history with 1,308 kills and is ninth in the A-Sun.
“This is a special night because I know how hard she’s worked and I know how much she’s grown,” Rosenthal said. “It’s been a lot of fun to watch her play and watch her mature as a person and a player.
“I can’t say enough of what she’s meant to the program. She will be missed quite a bit.”
Green leads the A-Sun with 4.79 kills per set in conference play.
“It’s awesome to see Kaycee at the top of the conference,” Rosenthal said. “We count on her a little more than we’ve had in the past. It’s fun to see her step up and rise to that occasion.”
LU finishes its last regular season conference weekend on the road against Florida Gulf Coast Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. and Stetson Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
FGCU was the only team to defeat the Lady Bisons in the first half of the Atlantic Sun schedule on Oct. 12 in Allen Arena in a 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 25-23) sweep.
The Eagles are the only other team to have clinched a spot in the A-Sun tournament.
