NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb volleyball team finished a five-match homestand dropping Atlantic Sun Conference opponent Mercer 3-0 in Allen Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bisons went a perfect 5-0 during the homestand and finished 8-1 in the regular season in conference play in Allen Arena.
With the score tied at six in the first set, the Lady Bisons scored the next 11 points. LU went on to win the set 25-11.
“Today, they came out and really set the tone in set one defensively,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It’s probably one of the best sets that I’ve seen us play. They really put a lot of pressure on Mercer.”
In the second set, the Lady Bisons were down by four points, 11-7. LU outscored Mercer 15-8 and eventually won the set 25-17.
In the third set, the score was once again tied at six. The Lady Bisons outscored the Bears 6-3 en route to a 25-18 set win and a match win.
Middle blocker Jewell Dobson had a match-high 14 kills, followed by outside hitters Kaycee Green and Lauren Ford with 13 kills each.
Ford finished the week with a team-high 44 kills, a 4.40 kills per set, a .310 hitting percentage, three assists and seven serve aces. The sophomore added three total blocks and had 53.0 points, 5.30 points per set.
Setter Caitlin Dotson had her 12th double-double on the season, her 25th of her career, with 40 assists, 12 digs and added four kills.
“What stood out the most was there in the third set we had a couple of bad decisions and instead of continuing that, I thought Dot (Caitlin Dotson) did a fantastic job of letting those plays just be bad plays. She didn’t let them influence future plays.
“The other thing that Dot did extremely well was to understand what their blockers were trying to do. She put us into some great hitting scenarios, so props to her.”
Dotson had 134 assists, a 13.40 assists per set, 11 kills and 29 digs throughout the week. She also had two double-doubles and had at least 40 assists in each of the three matches.
Libero Stephanie Rex had a match-high 13 digs, while Dotson and Stout both added 12 digs.
The Lady Bisons had 16 serves throughout the week, 1.6 serves per set.
“Our service game right now, knock on wood, is doing very well,” Rosenthal said. “The variations of the serve and different serves, where we serve and how we serve, puts a lot on teams because they are always getting something different.”
The Lady Bisons are 17-10 and 14-2 in the conference, while Mercer drops to 9-17, 5-11.
Jennifer Katona led Mercer with seven kills and Emily Rochefort had eight digs. Carly Iannarino added 11 assists for the Bears.
The Lady Bisons finish the regular season this weekend on the road against Florida Gulf Coast Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. and Stetson Saturday at 1 p.m.
FGCU was the only team to defeat the Lady Bisons in the first half of the Atlantic Sun schedule on Oct. 12 in Allen Arena in a 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 25-23) sweep.
