SEATTLE, Wash. – Lipscomb volleyball standouts Lauren Ford and Jewell Dobson received Division I Honorable Mention All-America honors, the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Wednesday.
“Jewell and Lauren being named All-American Honorable Mention is a huge honor,” Lipscomb volleyball coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “Being recognized on a national level is a huge success for them individually and for our program.
“The honor is even more special as both of them are current juniors and have another year of eligibility. The future continues to be bright for our program.”
Ford, an outside hitter, and Dobson, a middle blocker, were also named to the AVCA South Region team on Dec. 11 and join 142 other student-athletes honored in the 33rd annual AVCA Division I All-America Teams for women's volleyball.
The 2013 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, Dobson propelled the Lady Bisons to their sixth A-Sun Championship final in the last seven years. She led the A-Sun in kills per set (4.53), is currently 13th in the nation in the category and has ranked among the nation's top 10 for most of the season. She is also among the top 50 in the nation in hitting percentage, checking in at No. 37 (.378).
A 2013 A-Sun First-Team and A-Sun Championship All-Tournament Team selection, Dobson was also a two-time A-Sun Player of the Week in 2013. With 507 kills in 2013, she totals 1,123 for her career and this season became one of six in the Lipscomb program in the NCAA era and the seventh overall to reach 1,000 career kills. Dobson ranks 11th nationally in points per set (5.16).
Ford joined Dobson on the 2013 A-Sun Championship All-Tournament Team and is also one of the six players in Lipscomb’s NCAA history to break 1,000 kills barrier. She was one of four Lady Bisons on the A-Sun All-Conference First Team and finished third in the conference overall in kills per set (3.77). Ford was also third among active career leaders in kills in the A-Sun, now with 1,138 for her career.
Dobson and Ford helped Lipscomb lead the nation in kills per set for most of the season and the Lady Bisons currently rank third (15.03) nationally.
“The seasons that both Jewell and Lauren had were tremendous and the honors were well-deserved,” Rosenthal said. “I couldn’t be more proud of these two as they continue to be tireless workers. They are always looking for ways to advance their game.
“Beyond the court they are great leaders and phenomenal teammates. I am thrilled for them.”
The selections were made by the AVCA Division I All-America Committee: East Region: Mike Johnson, Xavier; East Coast Region: Tonya Johnson, Georgia Tech; Midwest Region, Chris Lamb, Wichita State; North Region: Molly Alvey, Cincinnati; Northeast Region: Sherry Dunbar, Indiana; Pacific North Region: Jennifer Greeny, Washington State; Pacific South Region: Jeff Nelson, New Mexico; South Region: Matt Peck, Middle Tennessee; Southeast Region: Craig Skinner, Kentucky; Southwest Region: Santiago Restrepo, Oklahoma.
