Tuesday, October 14, 2008It wasn’t whether the Lipscomb Lady Bisons won or lost against Tennessee State University, but how they played the match.
In the first set Tuesday night at the Kean Center the visiting Lady Bisons set the tone and won 25-19. In set two once the game reached the 20s the Lady Bisons started losing their way falling 25-21. In set three the Lady Bisons fell 25-18. They rebounded for a 28-26 win in set four and then dropped set five 15-11.
TSU represented the Ohio Valley Conference last season in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Bisons were the Atlantic Sun representative.
“I was pleased with how we played the first set,” said Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal. “We executed our game plan. We did what we are supposed to do.
“In set two we executed our game plan for most of the set and after that it a lackluster performance.”
In an effort to get the Lady Bisons back on track Rosenthal has given his team the day off Wednesday.
“We will address our performance later this week,” said Rosenthal as the Lady Bisons prepare for the second half of the Atlantic Sun round robin schedule. “I’m not concerned with wins and losses. I just want us to get back on track.
“Our players know what they are capable of doing. Wins and losses will take care of themselves.”
Rosenthal has been concerned about the level of play of his team for almost a week. He is hopeful the day off will help.
“Athletically Tennessee State was very good,” said Rosenthal. “They made some plays and we didn’t.
“I’m confident in our players. We have proven to be resilient. We just have to get back on track.”
The win ended a three-match losing streak for TSU and ended a three-game winning string for the Lady Bisons.
Middle blocker Alex Kelly made a team-high 14 kills and a match-high 21 digs, her eighth straight match with double-doubles in kills and digs.
Outside hitter Katie Bradley added 12 kills. Middle blocker Amy Trykowski and opposite Erin Pierce each chipped in 11 kills.
Setter Jake Pease and libero Jessica Turner made 10 digs each.
Middle blocker Katie Rose, Kelly and Turner each made two service aces.
TSU had three players finish in double figures in kills and digs. Christine Lowe made 14 kills and was credited with 12 digs. Shawna Ruiz made 12 kills and 10 digs. Terraka Walker made 13 kills and added 12 digs.
The Lady Bisons dropped to 12-8 overall. They are 4-4 this season in five-set matches. TSU is 5-11.
