Senior Alex Kelly Shines at Bluejay Invitational
The Lady Bisons defeated host Creighton 3-1 Saturday afternoon in the second match of the Bluejay Invitational.

“It’s a great win especially against a home team,” Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “They are a great team and a program that I eye as somebody we would like to be like, so to come from behind down 1-0, I was really pleased.”

The Lady Bisons lost the first set 20-25 and then came back to win the next three with scores of 25-22, 28-26, and 25-21 respectively to clinch the win.

“We had a couple of silly errors in the first set we really couldn’t afford,” Rosenthal said. “We talked about that we have to go about our business the way that we know how. We were down and executed the things that we practice day in and day out. With that, we saw some great results.”

Senior Alex Kelly led the team with 19 kills, 22 digs, and a .312 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Kaycee Green also made a showing with 15 kills. Meghan Hinemeyer had 11.

“Alex Kelly led the way,” Rosenthal said. “She played a phenomenal match. It’s tournaments like this that we realize how special of a player she is.”

Senior setter Jake Pease and freshman libero Stephanie Rex had 14 digs each while Pease also put up 51 assists.

“Jake ran the offense well today,” Rosenthal said. “We had great defensive effort, but it always helps when your setter is rockin’ and rollin’.”

A great surprise for the coaching staff was junior Kelsey Neumann. She came off the bench in the third set at a crucial time when the Lady Bisons were down four points and had two huge blocks that turned the set around. Rosenthal is also proud of the way Rex and Caitlin Dotson have stepped up.

The Lady Bisons will face San Francisco for the first time ever tonight at 5:30 to close out the tournament.

The Lady Bisons will need to shut down senior Sarah Mandala, but will be more focused on what’s happening on their own side of the court.

“Starting off the year 0-2, they are hungry for a win,” Rosenthal said. “I’m sure they don’t want to go back 0-3. We have to do a good job early on and be the aggressor. We've really got to focus on what we've got to do.”
