Tuesday, December 07, 2010Two Lipscomb Lady Bisons volleyball players _ middle blocker Alex Kelly and setter Stefine “Jake” Pease _ have been named to the South Region team by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
Pease was the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year for 2010. Kelly was the A-Sun Tournament MVP.
Both of them were named to the AVCA South Region team last season.
“Anytime players garner achievements like this it is often not only for the program, but for their sakes,” Lady Bisons coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “You have to also look a little bit closer into what is going on there.
“We are in a very tough region with the Sunbelt, Southeastern Conference and Southern Conference as well. We have two players from the same team on a very competitive team. That is very impressive.”
The Lady Bisons, the A-Sun regular season and tournament champion for the past two seasons, advanced to the NCAA Tournament where they lost to Ohio State 3-1 Dec. 4. For Pease and Kelly it was their third trip to the NCAA Tournament during their playing careers.
The Lady Bisons finished the season 24-7. Pease and Kelly never played on a team at Lipscomb that won fewer than 20 matches in a season.
“Last year was the first time we had ever had two players on that team,” Rosenthal said. “They are undoubtedly the best players in the conference. They belong on a national scale. Out of the thousands of players they are truly two of the best in the nation.
“It is also pretty neat to see them being recognized on a national scale. A lot of it had to do with how well they played against regionally-ranked teams and nationally-ranked teams. One of the reasons we schedule the way we do is because I think it is important that our girls get that exposure. We have played so many ranked teams that it really paid off this time.”
