NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Hitting the road for the final Atlantic Sun Conference tilts of 2011, the Lipscomb volleyball team travels to face ETSU on Friday night followed by a Saturday match at USC Upstate on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Bisons (17-8, 10-1 A-Sun) head into the weekend having clinched a bye in the upcoming A-Sun Volleyball Championship hosted at Lipscomb’s Allen Arena on Nov. 17-19 but have a chance to claim their third-straight regular-season conference crown this weekend with wins over ETSU (13-14, 6-5 A-Sun) and Upstate (8-19, 2-9 A-Sun).
Lipscomb continues to lead the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.250), assists (13.03/set), kills (14.09/set). Senior middle blocker Katie Rose is a big part of that equation leading the league with a .350 hitting mark overall and a scorching .425 in league play. Junior Kaycee Green ranks fourth in the conference kills averaging 3.56 per set.
The opponents: ETSU – The Bucs head into Friday’s contest having won three of their last four contests and need a win to clinch a berth in the A-Sun Tournament. Sophomore outside hitter Megan Devine leads ETSU averaging 4.16 kills per set, a number that ranks second best in the A-Sun. Kiley Tamblyn leads the way defensively for ETSU posting 4.18 digs per set.
“ETSU is a really tough place to play,” said Rosenthal. “They’re working hard to secure their spot in the A-Sun tournament, so they’re going to come at us with everything they’ve got. Megan Devine on the outside has done some tremendous stuff and is one of the premier hitters in our conference. But then you’ve seen some good work out of the middles from them with (Meredith) Hardy and (Jamie) Stancliff and then a little bit on the right side with McKayla Barber.”
USC Upstate – Eliminated from postseason consideration, the Spartans will take the floor for their final contest of the season on Saturday against the Lady Bisons. Senior middle blocker Morgan Thomas leads Upstate offensively averaging 3.16 kills per set. Sophomore libero Morgan Page is one of the best in the A-Sun leading the conference in digs in league matches with a 5.10 average.
