OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The latest ESPN.com/USA Softball rankings are out and the Lipscomb Lady Bison softball team is receiving votes for the second time this season.
Lipscomb (16-7) earned two votes this week. Winners of eight of their last nine, the Lady Bison are on a roll entering this weekend’s Mustang Classic in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The Lady Bison are receiving votes for the second time this year. Lipscomb received two votes in the preseason poll, released Jan. 24. The Lady Bison last received votes in a regular-season poll April 20, 2010.
Lipscomb has gotten contributions at the plate and on the mound this year. Senior pitcher Whitney Kiihnl is one of the top pitcher’s in any conference, with 13 wins and six shutouts already to her credit with the season just over a month old. Redshirt freshman Ashley Anderson has come into her own behind Kiihnl, allowing just two earned runs in her last 27 innings pitched and none since March 3.
The Lady Bison have been fierce at the plate as well. Junior transfer Kelsey Cartwright leads Lipscomb with seven home runs and 18 RBI, while Kiihnl’s .457 average paces the team. Senior catcher Mollie Mitchell has shrugged off a slow start and has driven in eight runs in the past five games.
At this weekend’s Mustang Classic, the Lady Bison face a trio of strong squads that provide a challenge in the final weekend of nonconference play. Host Cal Poly, UNLV and Ball State were all top-150 ranked in the RPI to end the 2011 season.
