Dobson named All-Tourney as Lady Bisons fall to Houston

NASHVILLE, Tenn.- Looking to close out the 2012 Lipscomb Invitational with a win, the Lipscomb volleyball squad was unable to keep pace with Houston dropping a 3-1 (17-25, 25-15, 19-25, 21-25) decision to the Cougars on Saturday afternoon at Allen Arena.

Sophomore Jewell Dobson was named on the All-Tournament team for her efforts throughout the tournament.  Dobson had 38 kills in three matches, including a career-high 16 against the Cougars (1-5).

“Jewell’s had a pretty good freshman year offensively, she continues to make huge strides,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said.  “Teams know about her because of what she did last year.  The fact that she’s scoring even when teams know about her that tells me that she continues to find ways (to score).”

With the score tied at 15 in the first set, Houston pulled away to win the set 25-17, but the Lady Bisons (1-5) came back in the second set and won 25-15.  LU opened up an 18-13 lead and kept extending the lead to win the set by 10 points.

The Cougars went on to win the third and fourth sets to pick up their first victory of the season.

“We’ve got to find ways to win,” Rosenthal said.  “I’ve got faith in this team and understand that this is part of the learning process.”

Senior Kaycee Green was honored before the game for the 1,000th kill of her career accomplished during the Appalachian State game on Friday.  Green added 13 more kills against Houston, giving her a career total of 1,038.  That places her in third all-time, one kill behind Alex Scruggs for second place in Lipscomb volleyball history.

After notching a new career high against Kentucky in last weekend’s Kentucky Classic, junior Caitlin Dotson set a new career best with 46 assists against Houston.

Junior Stephanie Rex led the Lady Bisons with 12 digs on the afternoon.  Sophomore Lauren Ford notched her second straight double-double with a 12-kill, 11 dig performance.

The Lady Bisons continue home action hosting in-state foe Austin Peay on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. before heading west for the Arizona Invitational next weekend.
