NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Caitlin Dotson recorded her 1,000th career assist as the Lipscomb volleyball team defeated Jacksonville 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) at Allen Arena in its Atlantic Sun Conference home opener.
Dotson entered the match needing only five assists for the milestone and reached that in the first set against the Dolphins (2-12, 0-1 A-Sun). The junior finished with 40 assists, the seventh time that the Louisville, Ky., native has had at least 40 assists in a match.
“Congrats to her and all that she’s gone through to get to that point,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “It is a big deal. Dot has definitely earned that and I’m proud of her.”
The Lady Bisons (5-8, 2-0 A-Sun) got off to a hot start scoring the first four points in the first set on the way to a 25-9 win.
“I thought we did a nice job executing the game plan from the get-go, and that was important to me setting the tone early,” Rosenthal said. “Especially being at home, I think it’s important to come out and dictate our play.”
Jacksonville scored the first two points in the second set, but then the Lady Bisons scored the next six points and went on to win the 25-20.
The third set was close at the beginning with the score tied at seven, but LU outscored the Dolphins 8-3 and won the third set 25-17.
Sophomore Jewell Dobson had 15 kills and a hitting percentage of .700, which ranks second all-time at Lipscomb for a player with at least 12 kills in a match.
“Jewell’s a special player and she’ll continue to be a special player,” Rosenthal said. “She did it from different spots tonight.”
The Lady Bisons extended their winning streak to 10 matches over Jacksonville. They have not dropped a set to the Dolphins since the 2008 season.
