Green leads volleyball to seventh straight in A-Sun

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb volleyball team claimed its seventh-straight victory with a 3-1 (17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-16) victory over ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn., on Saturday afternoon staying unbeaten in Atlantic Sun Conference play.

The Lady Bisons (10-8, 7-0 A-Sun) started off slow in the opening frame as it only had one lead, 1-0.  LU was down by a point 8-7, but the Bucs (12-8, 3-3 A-Sun) outscored the Lady Bisons 8-2 and ETSU won the set 25-17.

The opening stanza saw the two squads trade blows early but the Bucs (12-8, 3-3 A-Sun) went on an 8-2 run down the stretch to win the set 25-17.

The second set was a different story, however.  The Lady Bisons scored the first eight points in the set, but ETSU stormed back to tie the score at 22.  Despite the strong comeback LU refused to go down 2-0, finished out the set strong and won 27-25.

“ETSU did a great setting the tone in the first set,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said.  “We did a nice job of getting a lead in the second set and found ourselves in a point-by-point battle."

The third set was close as ETSU claimed a late three-point lead late at 22-19, but the Lady Bisons outscored the Bucs 6-1, including scoring the last five points, to win the set 25-23.

After coming up one dig short of tying her career-high in Friday night's match against USC Upstate, Megan Stout tied her career-high with 16 digs against ETSU.The sophomore led the team in digs, while junior Stephanie Rex added 14.

“Megan was tremendous,” Rosenthal said.  “She was the most consistent defensive player today.  I was really proud of what she did.  Hats off to her.”

Like Friday night’s win over USC Upstate, three Lady Bisons had double-digit kills in the match against ETSU.  Senior Kaycee Green, the two-time reigning A-Sun Player of the Week, led the team with 22 kills, tying her season-high.  Sophomore Lauren Ford had 17 kills, while sophomore Jewell Dobson added 11.

Caitlin Dotson had 53 assists, her 10th match of at least 40 helpers.  The junior also set a career-high with six kills and just missed out on her eighth double-double as she added nine digs.

“Dot played well tonight understanding the flow and talking some chances that kept them on their heels,” Rosenthal said.  “It was fun watching the time that she chose to take those chances.”

Friday night’s match will pair up the only undefeated teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference as the Lady Bisons return home against Florida Gulf Coast (11-7, 7-0 A-Sun) at 6:30 p.m. followed by Stetson (4-19, 0-6) on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“It will be great to be back at home,” Rosenthal said.  “Back-to-back road weekends have been a grind, but the girls stuck together.  I was proud of the girls yesterday, but I am more proud of them today.”
