NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb volleyball team returns home to face Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night at 6:30 and Stetson on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Allen Arena will try to stay undefeated record in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The Lady Bisons (10-8, 7-0 A-Sun) and FGCU (12-7, 7-0 A-Sun) are the only two undefeated teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference. LU is riding a season-high seven-match winning streak, while the Eagles are riding an eight-match winning streak.
“This is probably one of those weekends that we all looked at before the season started and knew it was going to be a big one,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “As the season has played out, it’s becoming more and more interesting.”
This is the fifth consecutive season that the Lady Bisons have started 7-0 or better in conference play. The last time LU did not start 7-0 was in the 2007 season, where they started off with two losses.
Caitlin Dotson is coming off of her first career A-Sun Player of the Week on Monday. Dotson had 95 assists in two road matches and had an impressive 13.57 assists per set.
The junior setter had a double-double against USC Upstate on Friday night with 43 assists and 12 digs. Dotson just missed a double-double against ETSU on Saturday afternoon with 53 assists, nine digs and a career-high six kills.
The junior ranks first in A-Sun with 12.26 assists per set in conference play and is second in overall matches with 11.46 assists per set, which also ranks 16th in the NCAA.
With Dotson’s award, Lipscomb has won the last three A-Sun Players of the Week and four of the last five (Lauren Ford-Sept. 10 and Kaycee Green-Sept. 24 and Oct. 1). LU is the only A-Sun team with multiple A-Sun Players of the Week.
“It’s a neat honor and well deserved,” Rosenthal said. “To have won four of the last five weeks is an indication of what this program capable of doing.”
Dotson was also named as the TSWA volleyball Player of the Week on Tuesday. This is the second time that a Lipscomb volleyball player has won the award (Ford-Sept. 11).
LU is coming off a 3-0 sweep against USC Upstate to continue their unbeaten streak with a 9-0 record against the Spartans. The Lady Bisons won a 3-1 match against ETSU and is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings with ETSU.
Sophomore Megan Stout had 31 digs in two matches last weekend, including tying her career-high with 16 digs at ETSU.
“What we’ve been working towards all year is getting that consistent play out of all our defenders and I thought we did a nice job of that last weekend,” Rosenthal said.
The Lady Bisons own an 8-2 record over Florida Gulf Coast, including winning the last seven meetings. LU has only lost three sets during the seven-match winning streak.
The Eagles are led by Jill Hopper with 153 kills, Gigi Meyer with 366 assists and Whitney Masters with 211 digs.
The Lady Bisons lost their first-ever match against Stetson (4-20, 0-7 A-Sun), but since then LU has won the last 10 meetings. Stetson plays at Northern Kentucky on Friday night before heading to Nashville.
Kaley Melville (261 kills), Kelli Carneal (400 assists) and Monique Russell (376 digs) led the Hatters.
There will be free food and T-shirts for the first 300 students who show up for Friday night’s match against the Eagles.
“We want to encourage everyone, not only to come out and be there, but we want them to be loud,” Rosenthal said. “Our girls work extremely hard to have that Lipscomb jersey. To be able to come and give your support will completely energize our girls or help add to the energy that they are already bringing. Come out be loud because it should be a great match.”
Live video can be seen for both matches at asun.tv.
The Lady Bisons head back on the road against North Florida on Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. and Jacksonville on Saturday at 4 p.m.
LU defeated the Ospreys earlier this season in a dramatic comeback win in Allen Arena on Saturday afternoon on Sept. 22. The Lady Bisons found themselves in a 2-0 hole, but won the last three sets to win the match, 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-10, 25-18, 15-10).
The Lady Bisons also defeated the Dolphins in Allen Arena 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) on Friday night, Sept. 21.
