NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb volleyball team looks to start the second half of the Atlantic Sun Conference schedule and to continue its season-high five-match road winning streak against North Florida Friday at 6 p.m. and Jacksonville Saturday at 4 p.m.
LU defeated the Ospreys (12-10, 3-6 A-Sun) earlier this season in a dramatic comeback win in Allen Arena Saturday afternoon, Sept. 22. The Lady Bisons found themselves in a 2-0 hole, but won the last three sets to win the match, 3-2 (23-25, 22-25, 25-10, 25-18, 15-10).
The Lady Bisons also defeated the Dolphins (4-18, 2-7 A-Sun) in Allen Arena 3-0 (25-9, 25-20, 25-17) Friday night, Sept. 21.
“They played us extremely tough,” Lipscomb head coach Brandon Rosenthal said about the North Florida match earlier this season. “They have changed some things over the past couple of weeks. We are focusing on what we need to do better and we have a pretty good game plan against them.
“Jacksonville is going through some changes and starting to make some moves within the conference. They have a couple of wins under their belt. When we got them here, they were coming off a bunch of injuries. They are going to be a different team than we saw earlier in the season.”
LU holds an 8-2 record and has won the last eight meetings over UNF. The Lady Bisons have won the last 10 meetings against the Dolphins and have a 10-4 record.
The Ospreys are led by Paige Pridgeon with 277 kills, Britt Claessens with 808 assists and Nicole Baran with 426 digs.
Sammie Strausbaugh (212 kills), Kendall Courtney (739 assists and 212 digs) and Nicole Teplitz (210 digs) lead the Dolphins.
The Lady Bisons are coming off a 1-1 record last weekend. LU started with its first home conference loss against Florida Gulf Coast 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 25-23) on Friday night. FGCU beat LU by seven total points in the three sets.
The Lady Bisons last home conference loss was against the Eagles on Oct. 4, 2008, 3-2. That stretched over 29 consecutive A-Sun matches without a home loss.
Junior Claire Peterson highlighted the FGCU match with a career-high 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage.
The Lady Bisons set a school record with a .489 hitting percentage against Stetson Saturday with 50 kills, six errors and 90 attacks. The previous best was a .421 hitting percentage against Evansville Sept. 29, 2009 (54 kills-9 errors-107 attacks).
LU completed the first half of the A-Sun schedule with a 8-1 record, one behind FGCU.
“The team did a nice job in identifying themselves and pulling through some tough situations in the first half of the season,” Rosenthal said. “Our consistency of play got better over time and we were able to take advantage of leads.
“There are times that we do a great job in touching a lot of balls and even blocking a lot of balls. But then there are times, it goes a little bit absent. We’ve got to continue to be a little more aggressive in blocking.”
The Lady Bisons return home for five consecutive home matches. LU faces ETSU Friday night, Oct. 26 at 6:30 and USC Upstate Saturday at 2 p.m.
“The crowds at our matches have been fabulous,” Rosenthal said. “The Stampede continues to impress me. It’s not the size of it, but it’s the atmosphere they bring to the table and I think our girls are feeding off that.”
LU defeated USC Upstate Friday night, Oct. 5 in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) sweep in Spartanburg, S.C. to keep their perfect 9-0 record against the Spartans.
The Lady Bisons beat ETSU in Johnson City, Tenn., 3-1 (17-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-16) on Saturday, Oct. 6. LU is 9-1 against the Bucs in the 10 meetings.
