NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb volleyball program announced the signing of another incoming student-athlete - Kayla Ostrom.
Ostrom will be the fourth incoming freshman to the volleyball program. LU coach Brandon Rosenthal announced in January that Maggie Allen, Kaitlin Bradley and Kaitlyn Teeter will be joining the program in the fall.
Ostrom, a West Lafayette, Ind., native is a senior at William Henry Harrison High School, the same high school that sophomore middle blocker Molly Spitzangle graduated from.
Ostrom also played on the same club that Spitznagle and senior libero Stephanie Rex played on.
“We knew of her very well,” Rosenthal said. “She plays with a ton of passion. She can do a lot of different things and she continues to try to put herself into position where she’s always going to get better.
“Her high level of club team and a pivotal member of that club team will help her transition to Division I volleyball.”
Ostrom was originally a right side hitter, but moved to the setter position, which has piqued Rosenthal’s interest.
“She is someone that I’ve been watching for years,” Rosenthal said. “Initially, we didn’t have a spot for her because of her position. We came to find out that she was moving to the setting position full time. I didn’t have to be reminded of who she was.”
Ostrom’s change to the setter position will help Lipscomb over the next couple of years after the 2013 season when current senior setter Caitlin Dotson graduates.
“I’m very excited to see what Kayla’s going to bring to the table,” Rosenthal said. “With “Dot” being a senior and Kayla coming in, there’s going to be a lot of room for her to learn and to grow not only as a setter, but as a player. Kayla’s going to be a tremendous asset to our program for the next four years.”
Ostrom set high school records of single season assists with 941, single season aces with 132, career assists with 2,542 and career aces with 247.
“Lipscomb University sounds like a perfect fit for me,” Ostrom said. “I’m excited to join the LUV family.”
Ostrom helped her high school team to sectional championships in 2009, 2010 and 2012 and the Hoosier Crossroads Conference Championship in 2010.
This is the second incoming student-athlete that has been named on Under Armor’s All-American Watch List in 2012. Teeter was also named on the watch list.
Ostrom was named to the All-Hoosier Crossroads Conference in 2011, 2012 and was an honorable mention in 2010.
Ostrom was also named to the All-Area First Team for three seasons (2010-12) and the Journal and Courier Big School Player of the Year in 2012.
Ostrom was the team captain in 2011 and co-captain in 2012 as well as the MVP in 2012.
Ostrom also has done well in the classroom. She was named the Hoosier Girls State Delegate. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Keyettes. She has received The Royce B. Adams Memorial Award and was named her high school valedictorian.
