NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Preconference games are over for the most part and now it is time for teams to really get down to business with the start of the Atlantic Sun portion of the schedule.
The Lipscomb Lady Bisons are at home at Allen Arena Friday night at 6:30 to host Northern Kentucky in its conference opener after closing out the preconference portion of the schedule with a pair of road matches at Kentucky and Xavier last weekend.
This is the third straight year the Lady Bisons have opened the conference portion of the season against the Norse. It is the first time the Lady Bisons have hosted the season opener between the two teams.
Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal is 111-38 overall in 11 seasons in the A-Sun.
The match will be televised live on ESPN3 as well as A-SUNTV.
Scouting the Lady Bisons (6-6)
Lipscomb is out to break a three-match losing streak, the first since the 2012 season. The Lady Bisons have not lost four matches in a row since the 2007 season.
They are 9-2 in conference opening matches with wins in their last six.
Outside hitter Lauren Ford is second in the A-Sun with 3.67 kills per set. Setter Kayla Ostrom is also second in the conference with 10.39 assists per set. Libero Bri McCombs is averaging 4.20 digs per set.
Lipscomb is second as team in kills per set with 14.6.
Scouting Northern Kentucky (10-3)
Northern Kentucky is the only A-Sun team with 10 victories and sits on top of the conference standings. Northern Kentucky has won its last four matches.
The Norse are one of three A-Sun teams to average more than 12 kills per set and 15 digs per set according to the A-Sun reports.
Jenna Ruble has 131 kills and Jayden Julian is right behind her with 130.
Defensive specialist Mel Stewart leads the A-Sun with 4.53 digs per set and is second in total digs with 213. Northern Kentucky is second as a team in digs per set.
Northern Kentucky leads the conference with a .224 hitting percentage.
The Lady Bisons are 4-0 against Northern Kentucky overall. Last year the Purple and Gold prevailed 3-0 on Sept. 18 and 3-1 Oct. 8.
This marks the first time Northern Kentucky is eligible for the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Norse are not yet eligible for the NCAA Tournament.
Ostrom gives an assist
Two teams are on top of the assists per set list in the A-Sun. FGCU and Lipscomb average 12.08 per set.
Lipscomb Kayla Ostrom and FGCU’s Gigi Meyer lead their teams from the setter position, and have combined for over 1,000 assists this season according to the A-Sun notes package.
The Blocks House
Lipscomb middle blocker Molly Spitznagle leads the A-Sun in solo blocks with 14. Northern Kentucky’s Keely Creamer has 10 solo blocks.
Time to kill
Lipscomb outside hitter Lauren Ford and right side Brittnay Estes have combined for 323 kills. According to A-Sun reports they are the second highest ranking duo in the conference trailing Jacksonville’s Sammie Strausbaugh and Emily Laskelle.
Ford has moved into third place overall in kills in a career for the Lady Bisons.
No doubting Thomas
Freshman Brittany Thomas stepped up against Kentucky and Xavier this past weekend. She made 10 digs, both season and career highs, against Kentucky and then came back with nine against Xavier,
Sophie Kellerman’s 16 digs at Xavier were also season and career highs for her.
