The Lipscomb Lady Bison Volleyball team is making their first Atlantic Sun Conference trip of the season with stops at USC Upstate and Kennesaw State.
The Lady Bisons are coming off a 3-1 win over Northern Kentucky at Allen Arena to start conference play. Upstate lost is conference opener 3-2 to Kennesaw State.
Game time at USC Upstate is 5 p.m. Friday. The game is scheduled to be seen on ASunTV.
Saturday’s 2 p.m. match with Kennesaw State will be televised on ESPN3.
Scouting USC Upstate (9-8, 0-1 in the A-Sun)
The Spartans have lost their last three matches and are coming off a 3-0 loss at Winthrop Tuesday night.
They lost their conference opener to Kennesaw State 3-2 at the Hodge Center.
Upstate is second overall in the conference with a .188 opponent hitting percentage.
Middle blocker Emily Koelling is fifth in the A-Sun with a .263 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Kayla Eversgerd is ninth in the conference in kills with 166, 3.07 per set. Libero Kaleigh Kelley is sixth in digs with 258, 3.97 per set.
The Lady Bisons are 12-0 all-time against USC Upstate. In the 12 matches Upstate has won only three sets.
Scouting Kennesaw State (7-8, 1-0 in the A-Sun)
Outside hitter Kelly Marcinek leads Kennesaw State in kills with 189, 3.32 per set. Libero Katarina Morton leads in digs with 241, 4.23 per set.
The Owls have seven players in double figures in blocks. Middle blocker Megan McGuinness is the leader with 29 (28 block assists).
Kennesaw State is coming off a 3-2 road win over USC Upstate Sept. 27. The two teams have shared one common opponent in non-conference matches this season losing 3-0 to Georgia Tech in Atlanta Sept. 23.
The Lady Bisons lost 3-2 at Allen Arena to Georgia Tech Sept. 12 in the Lipscomb Invitational.
The Lady Bisons are 14-0 in the series with Kennesaw State, including three wins last season. The Lady Bisons beat Kennesaw State twice during the regular season in 2013 and also won in the first round of the Atlantic Sun Tournament against the Owls on their home court.
Setter Kayla Ostrom made a season and career high 59 assists in the 3-1 win over Northern Kentucky.
It was her third time this season to make more than 50 assists. She was credited with 54 vs. ETSU Sept. 13 and 52 Sept. 6 vs. Illinois State.
Ostrom is second in the conference overall in assists with 568, 10.72 per set. In conference play only she leads with 59 assists and in assists per set with 14.75.
The Lady Bisons lead the A-Sun overall in assists with 656, 12.38 per set. They also lead in conference matches only with 64, 16 per set.
Nothing to Spitz at
Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle was credited with 19 kills, both season and career highs, in the 3-1 win over Northern Kentucky.
Spitznagle has been in double figures in kills in four matches.
She is fourth in conference matches only in blocks with six (one solo, five assists), an average of 1.50 per set. She is fifth overall in the A-Sun averaging .85 blocks per set.
Spitznagle is fourth in conference matches only in kills with 19, 4.75 per set and fourth in hitting percentage at .325.
Climbing the team stats ladder
Ostrom’s 59 assists in the 3-1 win over Northern Kentucky Friday night (Sept. 26) ties for the second highest assists total for the Lady Bisons in a four-set match. Stefine “Jake” Pease made 59 kills at UT-Martin Oct. 25, 2007.
It is the highest number of assists by a Lady Bison in a four-set Atlantic Sun match.
Outside hitter Lauren Ford’s 23 kills in the Northern Kentucky match ties her career high for a four-set match. She made 23 kills vs. Kennesaw State Nov. 2, 2012.
Can you dig it?
The Lady Bisons are sixth in digs in the Atlantic Sun with 774, an average of 14.50 per set.
Libero Bri McCombs has double figures in digs in all 13 matches this season.
McCombs is fourth overall in the conference in digs with 208, an average of 4.16 per set.
Brittany Thomas made a season and career high 12 digs in the win over Northern Kentucky. It was her second double figures digs total in a match. She has been in double figures in two of her last three matches.
Time to kill
Lipscomb leads the A-Sun overall in kills with 699, an average of 13.19 per set. They also lead in conference matches only with 69 and an average of 17 per set.
Ford has double figures in kills in 11 of 13 matches this season. She finished with 23 kills vs. Northern Kentucky, the fourth time this season she has made 21 or more kills. She made 21 vs. ETSU Sept. 13, 22 at Missouri Sept. 6 and 24 vs. Illinois State with 24.
She has 1,341 kills, only the third Lipscomb player to pass 1,300 career kills. Ford is also tied for seventh on the A-Sun all-time career kills list.
Ford is second overall in the conference in kills with 203, 3.83 per set. She is also second in conference matches only with 23, an average of 5.75 per set.
She is fourth in hitting percentage in conference play only with a .327 and eight in conference play overall with a .253.
Right side Brittnay Estes has double figures in kills in 11 of 13 matches this season.
Ford has 21 or more kills in a match four times.
McCombs has made 20 or more digs five times this season.
