Volleyball prepares for weekend matches

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons volleyball team enters Halloween week with a couple of scary challenges.

On Oct. 31 they will face Stetson at Allen Arena at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday first place will once again be on the line as Florida Gulf Coast visits at 2.

The match with Stetson will be shown live on ESPN 3.

Lipscomb and FGCU each are 7-1 this season in Atlantic Sun Conference matches. Lipscomb is 14-7 overall and FGCU is 14-8. The Lady Bisons will be out to rebound from a 3-2 loss at Northern Kentucky to start the second half of the A-Sun season. FGCU dropped its first two sets and then came back to beat Stetson in its home court 3-2 in its last match.

Stetson sits in third place in the conference with a 5-3 record, 14-8 overall.

 

Offensive confrontation: The top two setters in the A-Sun will be pitted against each other when the Purple and Gold face FGCU.

FGCU’s Gigi Meyer leads the A-Sun overall and in conference matches in assists. Lipscomb’s Kayla Ostrom is second.

Meyer has 1,013 assists overall, an average of 11.51 per set. Ostrom has 863, an average of 10.92.

In conference matches Meyer has 398 assists, an average of 12.44 per set. Ostrom has 322, an average of 11.93 per set.

Overall FGCU is first in both assists and kills. The Eagles have 1,127 assists, 12.81 per set and 1,184 kills, 13.45 per set.

Lipscomb is second in both categories overall with 1,052 assists, 12.52 per set, and 1,123 kills, 13.37 per set.

In conference matches only FGCU leads in assists with 432, 13.50 per set. The Eagles are second in kills with 447, 13.97 per set.

Lipscomb is first in kills in conference matches with 451, 14.09 per set, and second in assists with 422, 13.19 per set.

FGCU is second overall with a .207 hitting percentage. The Lady Bisons are in a close third with a .206 percentage.

In conference matches only Lipscomb is second with a .236 hitting percentage and FGCU is third with a .224.

 

Top 40 RPI: The Lady Bisons were 1-1 for the week, but are rated No. 43 in the NCAA Division I RPI after being ranked No. 40 last week.

 

National rankings:  Ostrom is ranked 39th in NCAA Division I with 10.92 assists per set.

Senior outside hitter Lauren Ford is rated No. 58 in total kills with 324.

 

They’re a hit: This weekend’s matches will feature four of the top five leaders in hitting percentage.

FGCU’s Olivia Mesner leads both overall (.379) and in conference matches only (.392).

Stetson’s Shelby Connors is third overall with a .289 hitting percentage. She is fifth in conference matches with a .276.

Lipscomb’s Molly Spitznagle is fourth in conference matches only (.313) and fifth overall (.254).

Katie Bradley has blossomed in conference matches for the Lady Bisons and is second in conference matches only with a .363 hitting percentage.

 

Killing floor: Four of the top leaders in kills will also be on the court this weekend as well.

Lipscomb’s Lauren Ford is second overall in the conference in kills with 324, 3.86 per set. She is also second in conference matches only with 134, 4.19 per set.

Mesner is third in kills overall with 289, 3.28 per set. She is third in conference matches with 117, 3.66 per set.

FGCU’s Elenora Kazarian is fourth in conference matches with 115, 3.59 per set.

Stetson’s Madison Akins is fifth in conference matches in kills with 108, 3.27 per set.
