Volleyball prepares for final A-Sun road trip of season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Lipscomb Lady Bisons are making their last road trip of the regular volleyball season this weekend.

They will be based in Jacksonville where they will face North Florida Friday at 6 p.m. and Jacksonville Saturday at 12 p.m.

The Lady Bisons are ranked 38th this week in the NCAA Division I RPI, the highest ranking since the 2009 team finished at 36th. The Lady Bisons are the highest ranked collegiate volleyball team in the state of Tennessee.

The Lady Bisons, the first team to clinch a berth in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, are 16-7, 9-1 in conference play. They have won 10 of their last 11 matches and are coming off back-to-back wins over Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast.

North Florida is 11-15, 4-6 in the conference. Jacksonville, which will face Northern Kentucky Friday night, is 13-12, 4-6 in the A-Sun.

The Lady Bisons defeated North Florida 3-2 Oct. 11 at Allen Arena. They beat Jacksonville 3-1 on Oct. 10.

 

SCOUTING NORTH FLORIDA

Since they last faced the Lady Bisons the Ospreys have won six of their last seven matches and are coming off of a 3-2 win over Kennesaw State.

The last two matches for North Florida have been five sets.

Courtney Miller leads North Florida with 295 kills, 3.04 per set. Miller also has 249 digs.

Cari Whitmire leads the conference in digs with 500, 4.81 per set.

North Florida has two conference wins against Kennesaw State and has split with both USC Upstate and Jacksonville.

 

SCOUTING JACKSONVILLE

The Dolphins are led by Sammie Strausbaugh, the leader in the conference in kills with 422, 4.74 per set. She earned A-Sun Player of the Week honors this week.

Strausbaugh also leads the conference in service aces per set with .39, 35 total.

She is the team leader in digs with 313, 3.56 per set.

Kelly Koop was this week’s A-Sun Defensive Player of the Week with 36 digs and six blocks in two matches.

The last matches for the Dolphins have been five-set decisions with a loss at Kennesaw State and a win at USC Upstate. They are 4-2 in their last six matches.

 

LADY BISONS IN THE A-SUN

Overall, Lipscomb leads the conference in kills per set with 13.51. They have a total of 1,229 in 91 sets.

The Lady Bisons are second overall in assists per set with 12.66, a total of 1,152. They are also second overall with a .211 hitting percentage.

Overall in the conference outside hitter Lauren Ford is second in kills with 358, 3.93 per set. She is also seventh in hitting percentage (.244).

Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle is fourth in hitting percentage with a .259.

Setter Kayla Ostrom is second in assists per set with 10.92, 863 total.

Libero Bri McCombs is fifth overall in digs per set with 4.03, 355 total.

In conference matches only the Lady Bisons are first in assists (13.38 per set, 522 total) and kills (14.28 per set, 557 total).

They are second with a .242 hitting percentage.

In conference matches Ford is second in kills with 168, 4.31 per set.  She is seventh in hitting percentage (.243).

Four of the top 10 hitting percentage leaders in conference matches wear the Purple and Gold. In addition to Ford, middle blocker Katie Bradley is third (.328), Spitznagle is fourth (.315) and Estes is ninth (.224).

Ostrom is second in assists per set with 11.93, 322 total.

McCombs is tied for fourth in service aces with .33 per set, 13 total. Ostrom is eighth with an average of .30 per set, a total of eight.

McCombs ranks seventh in digs with an average of 3.92, 153 total.

 

DIGGING IT

The Lady Bisons have five players with more than 100 digs this season. Libero Bri McCombs leads the way with 355. She is followed by Sophie Kellerman with 261, Brittnay Estes with 214, Kayla Ostrom with 169 and Brittany Thomas with 111.

The totals for Kellerman, Estes, Ostrom and Thomas are career season highs.

 

KILL ZONE

There are five Lady Bisons with 100 or more kills this season. Ford leads the way followed by Estes with 264, Spitznagle with 212, Kellerman with 180 and Katie Bradley with 100.

Estes and Bradley have set new career season records. Spitznagle is 20 kills away from tying her season high of 232 set last season.

 

ACES HIGH

Three Lady Bisons have more than 20 service aces this season.

Thomas leads with a career-high 27. McCombs and Estes are tied at 22 each.

Ostrom is close to joining the group. She has 19.

Estes, Thomas and Ostrom have set new season career highs.

 

FORD POISED FOR MOVE UP

Ford enters the weekend with 1,497 career kills, sixth best overall in the A-Sun and second highest in Lipscomb’s all-time record book.

In the conference Lindsay Cleveland, who played for Belmont from 2002-2005, is fifth with 1,552.

Maggie Johnson, also a former Belmont player from 2008-2011, sits in fourth with 1,558.
