OMAHA, Neb. – The Lipscomb volleyball team is in Omaha this weekend at the Bluejay Invite and coach Brandon Rosenthal hopes his players have packed a large bag filled with consistency for the trip.
The Lady Bisons face host Creighton Friday at 6 p.m. at D.J. Sokol Arena. Saturday they play Pacific at 10 a.m. followed by CSU Bakersfield at 5:30 p.m.
“This is one of those tournaments where you can go 3-0 or 0-3,” Rosenthal said. “It is all about the mental part of the game where you have to understand what is going on and be able to bring it. If you let down for a second it is going to cause some problems.”
Lipscomb, 5-1, closed out the Lipscomb Invitational with a 3-0 loss to Florida Atlantic.
“The biggest thing is consistency of play,” Rosenthal said. “The first five matches we did a nice job and then let up against Florida Atlantic and couldn’t get anything going.
“For the most part it was kind of a wakeup call. With our schedule the way it is we have to bring it every match. We should expect that if we don’t go out and play our best against good teams we are going to lose.”
Lipscomb one of three Top 25 vote receivers in Invite
Lipscomb received five votes for the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 this week.
Creighton also received five votes. Pacific had six votes.
This is the second week in a row Lipscomb has received top 25 votes.
Creighton: The Bluejays, from the Big East, enter their tournament with a 2-4 record and are coming off a 3-0 win over No. 10-ranked Kentucky.
Lipscomb is 2-1 all-time against Creighton. The Lady Bisons won 3-1 at the Jayhawk Invitational at Kansas in 2009 and then beat Creighton 3-1 on its home court in the Bluejay Invitational in 2010. Last season the Lady Bisons lost to Creighton 3-1 at the Jayhawk Invitational. Creighton was ranked No. 23 at the time.
Creighton won both the Big East regular season and tournament championships in 2014.
They have a balanced offensive attack with four players with more than 50 kills – Jaali Winters (69, 3.0 per set), Jess Bird (66, 2.87 per set), Marysa Wilkinson (55, 2.39 per set) and Lauren Smith (54, 2.35 per set).
Defensively, Kate Elman leads the team with 86 digs, 3.74 per set.
“Every time we have ever played them it has been a good match,” Rosenthal said.
CSU Bakersfield: The Roadrunners, from the Western Athletic Conference, are 1-6. This is the first time Lipscomb has played CSU Bakersfield.
After losing their first five matches they beat Alabama State 3-1 in their last outing.
Edithza Urias leads the team in kills with 83. Kelsee Sawyer has 71.
On defense Morginne DeMarco has 88 digs.
Pacific: Pacific, like Lipscomb, is 5-1 this season. This will be the first time Lipscomb has played Pacific, a member of the West Coast Conference.
Pacific has won two tournament titles this season and is coming off a 3-1 win over Oregon State.
Lexi Elman is the leader in kills with 102, 4.64 per set. Kimmy Whitson has 225 assists, an average of 10.23 per set.
Defensively, two players have more than 60 digs. Katrin Gotterba leads with 65. Elman is close behind with 63.

In the first nine matches of the season Lipscomb will have faced five opponents for the first time.
Bluejay Invitational history
This is the second time Lipscomb has played in the Bluejay Invitational. In 2010 they finished 2-1 opening with a 3-1 loss to Kansas followed by a 3-1 win over Creighton and a 3-1 win over San Francisco.

As a team the Lady Bisons are 24th in assists per set.
They are 33rd in won-loss percentage at .833, 36th in team attacks per set with 37.08 and 38th in kills per set with 13.92.
