Volleyball heading north looking for success

EVANSTON, Ill. – The Lipscomb volleyball team is hoping a north wind blows some luck in their direction this weekend.

Friday night they open the Wildcat Challenge against host Northwestern at 7 at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Saturday they close out the tournament with a 2 p.m. meeting with Milwaukee.

It is the first time Lipscomb has played either team in volleyball.

The Bisons opened the season with a 5-0 record, but have lost the last five matches.

Middle blocker Jewell Dobson leads Lipscomb with 122 kills, 3.21 per set. She also has a .295 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Carly Nusbaum is second with 105 kills, 3.0 per set.

Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle leads the team with a .353 hitting percentage.

Libero Brittany Thomas has 158 digs, 4.05 per set.

Spitznagle is tops on the team with a combined total of 30 blocks. Dobson is close behind with 29.

Scouting Northwestern: This is the Wildcats home debut this season. The Big 10 team is 6-3.

Outside hitter Symone Abbott leads Northwestern with 114 kills, 3.80 per set. Defensive specialist/libero Caroline Niedospial is first on the team in digs with 160. 5.33 per set.

Setter Taylor Tashima has 337 assists, 11.23 per set.

The Wildcats have played only two matches this season that lasted longer than three sets. They won both of those sets.

Scouting Milwaukee: The Panthers, representing the Horizon League, enter the challenge with a 2-8 record. They have losses in the last eight matches after opening the season 2-0.

Right side Maggie Dunbar leads the team in kills with 106, an average of 3.21 per set. Libero Myanna Ruiz is first in digs with 196.

Setter Kayla Price has made 386 assists this season. Middle blocker Maddie Williams has 20 total blocks.

Quick hits:

Pleased to meet you: Counting this weekend’s tournament Lipscomb has played seven teams for the first time this season out of 12 matches.

They are 3-2 so far in these inaugural meetings.

NCAA ratings: Lipscomb setter Kayla Ostrom is sixth nationally in assists per set with 11.69. She has moved up to 11th in total assists with 456.

As a team Lipscomb is 45th in assists per set and first in the Atlantic Sun with 12.90.

The Bisons are 49th nationally in team kills with 523.

Ostrom is awesome: Ostrom recorded more than 50 assists for the fifth time this season tying her record for all of last season.

She has 1,565 career assists, fifth on the program’s all-time assists list.

Back home: Two Lipscomb players are returning to their home state to play. Defensive specialist Jenny Phelan is from Mother McAuley in Chicago. Outside hitter Lauren Anderson is from Deer Creek-Mackinaw High School in Mackinaw.

Next up:

Lipscomb stays on the road, but makes the short trip down the boulevard to face Belmont in the volleyball version of the “Battle of the Boulevard” Sept. 22. The match will start at 6 p.m.
