EVANSTON, Ill. – Lipscomb volleyball coach Brandon Rosenthal and his players are still sorting out a few things on the court.
Friday night in the Wildcat Classic Lipscomb fell 3-1 to host Northwestern. Lipscomb is back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday against Milwaukee at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
Lipscomb lost the first and second sets by scores of 25-20. The Bisons came back and took set three 25-19. They lost set four 25-19.
“We did a nice job in the first two sets,” Rosenthal said. “We did a really good job in the opening set. We had a lead, but unfortunately got stuck in a rotation we couldn’t get out of. We worked hard to get a lead, but just couldn’t finish it off.
“We fought hard in the second set. Execution-wise we were just a tad off. The third set was fantastic. The girls fought hard. We put a lot of pressure on them with our serve. We did a good job of defending the ball. In the fourth set we did a lot of the same things.”
Rosenthal stressed to his players the importance of avoiding errors in key situations.
“A lot of players made key errors,” Rosenthal said. “We will clean it up a little bit. It is hard right now for us because not many of these girls have been in a situation like this before.
“When we got to the point where we had to make plays – a play here or a play there – it just didn’t go our way. We will keep on working and stressing the same things.”
Twelve players saw time on the court.
Outside hitter Chloe Rogers tied for the match high with 13 kills.
Right side Brittnay Estes paced the team with 12 digs. Libero Brittany Thomas added 10. Setter Kayla Ostrom finished with 44 assists and 10 digs.
“We have to find that right mix,” Rosenthal said. “I thought Kate Bradley did a great job coming off the bench and adding some instant offense.
“Our hitters did a nice job. We have to be in system a little bit more with our passing.”
With the loss Lipscomb slips to 5-6 overall. Northwestern, from the Big 10, is 7-3.
- It was the second match for Rogers in double figures in kills this season.
- Bradley’s eight kills are a season high.
- This will be the first meeting between Lipscomb and Milwaukee in a volleyball match. After opening the season with two wins Milwaukee has lost its last eight matches. Lipscomb opened the season with a 5-0 record and has lost six in a row.
