NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb volleyball will face a major test Tuesday night.
The Bisons will venture out of the Atlantic Sun Conference once again this week when Western Kentucky visits Allen Arena at 6:30.
Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal is looking forward to the challenge. He is certain fans will see the highest level of volleyball played on both sides of the net.
“WKU is so well-coached and disciplined in the way they play the game,” Rosenthal said. “You have to bring your best against them. There will not be any lack of confidence on the floor on either side.
“Our team is excited to compete at the highest level and challenge one of the nation’s best. No doubt there will be plenty of firepower and gritty defense as there are a lot of similarities between the two programs.”
The match can be seen live on ESPN3.
“I am excited to have the opportunity to play WKU which is consistently a top 30 team,” Rosenthal said. “It’s always fun to go against one of the most competitive teams out there.”
Series history: Lipscomb is 1-7 against WKU overall. The last outing was 2014 at Allen Arena, a 3-0 win for WKU.
The only match win for the Bisons in the series is in 2009 at the Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville by a score of 3-0.
Match Preview: Both teams enter the match on a winning streak. Lipscomb, 8-6, has won its last three matches. Western Kentucky, from Conference USA is 15-2 with a nine-match winning streak.
Four WKU players have more than a 100 kills led by outside hitter Alyssa Cavanaugh with 194, 3.46 per set. Middle hitter Noelle Langenkamp has 180, an average of 3.05 per set.
Four WKU players also have more than 100 digs. Defensive specialist Georgia O’Connell leads with 252, 4.27 per set.
Langenkamp leads the team with 56 total blocks, .95 per set.
Lipscomb also has four players in double figures in kills. Middle blocker Jewell Dobson leads the way with 162. Outside hitter Lauren Anderson is only eight kills away from reaching 100.
Four Bisons are in double figures in digs. Libero Brittany Thomas has 218.
Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle is the block leader with 46.
Ten of the wins for the Hilltoppers this season have been 3-0 sweeps.
WKU received 39 votes this week in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll.
National rankings: Setter Kayla Ostrom is ranked eighth nationally in assists per set with 11.55. She is 16th in the nation in NCAA Division I in total assists with 635.
Lipscomb is 58th in the nation in assists per set with 12.76.
The team is 87th in team kills with 732 and 88th in kills per set with 13.31.
A-Sun ratings: Ostrom leads the conference in assists per set and total assists.
Spitznagle leads with a .359 hitting percentage. Dobson is ninth at .290.
Anderson is tied for fourth in service aces per set with .36 and tied for fourth in total service aces with 20.
Thomas is tied for third in total digs with 218 and seventh in digs per set with 3.96.
Lipscomb leads the conference in assists with 703, 12.78 per set.
The Bisons are second in kills with 733, 13.33 per set.
This is the first of three home matches this week for the Bisons.
They return to A-Sun play Friday night when Stetson visits for a 6:30 match at Allen Arena.
Sunday FGCU visits at 2 p.m.
