Lipscomb rated 102nd in first volleyball RPI

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The first NCAA Division I RPI ranking is out and the Lipscomb volleyball team is ranked 102.

That is the highest ranking for an Atlantic Sun team this week. Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal expects his team to improve its status before the season ends.

“It is what it is,” Rosenthal said. “I would love to be higher. It is really easy to get caught up in it and I would be lying if I didn’t say I was one of those.

“Looking ahead we will let the formula work itself out. Our focus is on the next match and the things we can control.”

Looking back at the non-conference portion of the season the ranking could have been higher if more matches had ended in the favor of the Bisons.

“There were a couple of variables we could have controlled that didn’t go our way,” Rosenthal said. “There were a couple of variables we can’t control that haven’t gone our way. We have to accept the fact this is our number at this point.”

While the RPI generates a level of interest both the Lipscomb coaches and the players have one major goal in mind and that is the A-Sun Tournament championship.

“For us there is way more focus on the conference championship because we have lost it for the past two years,” Rosenthal said. “I think it is one of those things where we have to understand the task at hand. Right now, they have really bought in to just being ready for the next match and I think that is all that matters.

“We have to keep our focus and keep moving forward. We can’t get caught up in sets and points. We have to play our game. We can’t control how another team plays on its side of the net, but we can on our side.”
