Bisons welcome NJIT to Allen Arena

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Lipscomb Bisons head into a short weekend of Atlantic Sun volleyball competition in a tie with Florida Gulf Coast for first place.

Both teams are 6-1 in conference matches. The only loss for the Bisons is a 3-2 decision Oct. 19 against Kennesaw State. The Bisons are 14-8 overall.

Lipscomb plays only one match this weekend. NJIT makes its first visit to Allen Arena Saturday for a noon match.

FGCU only has one match this weekend as well. The Eagles will play a home match with Stetson Saturday night.

This weekend starts the second half of the conference season.

Scouting NJIT: The Highlanders are 6-17, 1-6 in the A-Sun. A 3-1 match win over Stetson is the only conference victory for NJIT. They have only one victory on the road, a 3-1 decision at St. Francis-Brooklyn Sept. 5. They have lost their last two matches, both by 3-0 scores, to Kennesaw State and USC Upstate.

The Vukotic sisters, Danica and Nina, lead NJIT in kills. Danica has 307, 3.94 per set, and Nina has 219, 2.70 per kill.

Nina has 220 digs and Danica has made 220.

Adriana Nieto leads the Highlanders with 333 digs, 4.11 per set. Also in double figures in digs are Marija Tosic with 192 and Emily Krachenfels with 172.

NJIT has 116 service aces, third overall in the A-Sun.

The series: NJIT is in its first year as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. The only meeting between the two teams in volleyball was Sept. 25, a 3-0 sweep for Lipscomb in Newark, N.J. The Bisons posted a .444 hitting percentage in the match, a season high.

The Bisons won set one 25-15, set two 25-13 and set three 25-10.

Quick hits

Nusbaum is back: Outside hitter Carly Nusbaum is averaging 3.1 kills per set, second highest among A-Sun freshmen.

She has been in double figures in kills in her last two matches with 17 against Belmont Tuesday night and 21 against Kennesaw State, a career-high, Sunday. Both were five-set matches.

Nusbaum has missed approximately a quarter of the season with injuries.

Estes is the bestest: Right side Brittnay Estes has finished with 10 or more kills in seven of her last eight matches. She led the team with 20 kills in a 3-2 win over non-conference rival Belmont.

National rankings: Setter Kayla Ostrom is fourth in NCAA Division I with 997 total assists. She is sixth in assists per set with 11.73.

Libero Brittany Thomas is 72nd in total digs with 349.

The Bisons are eighth in team assists (1,138) and 16th in assists per set (13.39).

They are 14th in team kills (1,193) and 32nd in kills per set (14.03).

They are 49th in total attacks with 3,020.

A-Sun rankings: Three Lipscomb players are in the top 10 in the conference in matches overall in hitting percentage. Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle is second (.339) followed by middle blocker Jewell Dobson in third (.329) and right side Brittnay Estes in 10th place (.261).

Dobson is third overall in kills per set with 3.24 and fourth in total sets with 269.

Nusbaum is seventh overall with 3.11 kills per set and Estes is ninth with 2.96.

Ostrom leads in total assists overall and assists per set.

Outside hitter Lauren Anderson is ninth in service aces per set with .27.

Thomas is tied for fifth overall in digs per set with 4.11. She is third in total digs with 349.

As a team the Bisons are first overall in hitting percentage (.237), first in assists (1,138, 13.39 per set) and first in kills (1,193, 14.04).

In conference matches only four Lipscomb players are in the top 10 in hitting percentage. Dobson is first (.468), Spitznagle is fourth (.308), Estes is fifth (.300) and Lauren Anderson is 10th (.250).

Ostrom leads in assists per set with 12.00 and is second in total assists with 300.

Estes is tied for second in total kills (92) and is second in kills per set (3.68).

Dobson is fourth in both total kills (88) and kills per set (3.52).

Ostrom is ninth in service aces with .24 per set.

Thomas is tied for fourth in total digs with 104 and is fifth in digs per set with 4.16.

Lipscomb, as a team, is first in hitting percentage (.305), first in assists 369, 14.76 per set), first in opponent hitting percentage (.127) and first in kills per set (15.68).
