Nusbaum sets career high for kills in volleyball win

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman outside hitter Carly Nusbaum is becoming a force of nature for the Lipscomb volleyball team.

Nusbaum set a career record for kills with 23 to help lead Lipscomb to a 3-0 sweep of USC Upstate Friday night at the Hodge Center in Atlantic Sun action. The Bisons won set one 25-15, set two 25-16 and set three 25-21.

“Carly came out strong with nine kills in the first set,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “Match-up-wise she had some good things going for her.

“She was really seeing the court well. It was kind of fun to see that happen.”

Nusbaum also posted a .436 hitting percentage.

“We have said it for weeks – she is that type of player,” Rosenthal said. “She has so much range and that makes her tough to defend against.

“She has a ton of power. She jumps extremely well.”

Right side Brittnay Estes added 15 kills. She hit .400 for the match.

“Brittnay was pretty steady throughout,” Rosenthal said. “She averaged five kills per set, but she was overshadowed by Nusbaum.”

Defensively, the Bisons were also strong. They led the match in digs with 63 compared to 52 by the Spartans. Upstate entered the match as the national leader in digs per set and leads the conference in total digs.

Libero Brittany Thomas was credited with 21 digs. Outside hitter Lauren Anderson added 12.

“We have out-dug them both times we have played them this season,” Rosenthal said. “That is kind of the cherry on top.

“I thought Tommy had one of her best matches. I thought she really controlled the back row. We were solid all-around on defense.”

Setter Kayla Ostrom made 50 assists.

“The offense was clicking,” Rosenthal said. “We put up 56 kills in three sets and that is extremely hard to do. We were averaging just under 20 kills per set.

“We hit .313 as a team while holding them to .103. That was definitely a plus for us.”

Rosenthal was also impressed with Lipscomb’s passing in the match.

“I thought Tommy and Lauren Anderson did a fantastic job of passing,” Rosenthal said. “That is something that doesn’t necessarily show up in the stats.”

The Bisons are 16-8, 8-1 in the conference. Upstate falls to 13-12, 1-8 in the A-Sun.

“This was a pretty scrappy Upstate team,” Rosenthal said. “They work hard.”
