VAN ALSTINE - 4
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A share of the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title is nice, but Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal and his players don’t like to share.
Sunday afternoon the Bisons swept North Florida 3-0 at Allen Arena to earn the share of title. The victory also assures Lipscomb a first round bye in the Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Bisons are hosting the tournament Nov. 19-21.
“It is awesome to clinch a share of the title, but it is also a little daunting,” Rosenthal said. “We have a tough weekend ahead travel-wise. We have to take steps to keep focused.
“As you plan out the season your goal is to win the regular season title. The first round bye has also been our goal all season long. I am not surprised by it.”
The Bisons, 11-1 in the A-Sun, 19-8 overall, travel to Florida Gulf Coast, 9-3 in the conference, 20-9 overall on Friday. The Bisons close out the regular season Saturday afternoon at Stetson. One victory in the final weekend would seal the title for Lipscomb.
The Bisons won set one 25-17, set two 25-23 and set three 25-22 against UNF.
‘There were a couple of points here and there where we made a too many errors,” Rosenthal said. “But I thought our girls did a great job of controlling the match for the most part. We did a nice job with the game plan. There were just a couple of balls we let get away from us.
‘I thought the composure the girls showed, especially at the end of sets two and three, was good. Props to our girls for getting it done.”
Outside hitter Carly Nusbaum made a match-high 11 kills. Middle blocker Jewell Dobson chipped in with 10. Dobson also assisted on six blocks.
Middle blocker Molly Spitznagle finished with four blocks, one solo, and posted a .412 hitting percentage to go with nine kills. She made only two errors on 17 attacks.
Outside hitter Lauren Anderson added five blocks, one solo.
Rosenthal was most impressed with the 11 team blocks posted.
“I thought we did a fantastic job blocking,” Rosenthal said. “We are not known as a blocking team, but 11 team blocks is fantastic.
“We have been working hard on blocking. I think we have come up with a better idea in explaining some of the things we are trying to do. I credit Ann (Armes), Bill (Ebel) and Justin (Beachy) for helping work through some of that.”
Libero Brittany Thomas added a match-high 20 digs. Setter Kayla Ostrom finished with 35 assists.
- North Florida falls to 5-7 in the conference, 19-10 overall. The Bisons have a 14-3 record overall against the Ospreys.
- The Bisons closed out the regular season on the Allen Arena court with only three set losses in A-Sun matches, all in a 3-2 loss to Kennesaw State Oct 18.
- Nusbaum has led the Bisons in kills in six of the last seven matches. She has posted the match high in the past five matches.
- Thomas has finished with the match high in digs in five of the last six matches.
