Estes, Dobson Ostrom earn AVCA All-South Region Volleyball honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb senior right side Brittnay Estes was named First Team All-South Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Senior middle blocker Jewell Dobson and junior setter Kayla Ostrom were All-South Region Honorable Mention selections.

The AVCA First Team honor is another in a string of awards for Estes for the 2015 season. Estes was the Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, A-Sun Tournament Most Valuable Player and A-Sun First Team All-Conference.

“It is quite an honor for Brittnay when you see what region we are in and the talent she was up against,” Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal said. “This is not a ho-hum type of deal for her. It has a special ring to it.

“I couldn’t be more proud of her and all she has put into it as a player. This type of thing doesn’t happen all the time. Whether is it baseball, basketball, softball or volleyball an honor like this needs to be celebrated.”

Last season Estes was named AVCA All-South Region Honorable Mention. She finished this season with 376 kills and 273 digs.

Dobson was a member of the AVCA All-South Region Team in 2013. She redshirted in 2014 due to an ACL injury. She underwent surgery and endured rehab to be ready for the season. Rosenthal credits volleyball trainer Kelsey Ferguson for helping Dobson be ready for the 2015 season.

“I have been on record often saying Jewell is one of the best in the nation at what she does on the volleyball court,” Rosenthal said. “One year removed from ACL surgery it is pretty remarkable what she did.

“Some people say a player usually comes back better than before. That is easy to say, but a lot of things had to take place for it to be possible for her to continue to perform at a level that put her among the top players in the country. That is pretty special.”

Dobson spent last spring balancing her student teaching assignment with her training.

“Jewell’s schedule was pretty full,” Rosenthal said. “She would come in and train at 5 a.m. before going to teach. Then she would come back in the afternoon for weight training. Hat’s off to Kelsey for helping Jewell get it done.”

Dobson was named A-Sun First Team All-Conference and was also a member of the A-Sun All-Tournament Team this season.

Ostrom is fifth in the nation in both assists (1,446) and assists per set (12.05). She led the A-Sun in both categories.

She was named 2015 A-Sun Setter of the Year. She also was A-Sun First Team All-Conference as well as a member of the A-Sun All-Tournament Team. She was also named A-Sun Scholar-Athlete for volleyball.

“What a tremendous year Kayla has had,” Rosenthal said. “She sometimes didn’t get the attention she deserved so it was good to see her recognized for her season. She was a catalyst.”

Six Lipscomb players made more than 100 kills – Estes (376), Dobson (358), Carly Nusbaum (302), Molly Spitznagle (250), Lauren Anderson (219) and Chloe Rogers (123).

The Bisons are 11th in assists per set (13.65) as a team and team assists (1,638). They are 16th in kills per set (14.24) and 21st in team kills (1,721).

“It is one thing to set a ball,” Rosenthal said. “It is another thing to set a ball to the right position. No matter how good your hitters are someone has to get the ball there.

“Kayla is a great person. She is a tremendous worker. It is pretty awesome to see her honored as a junior.”
